Yes, we will have to agree to disagree. I think accurate rating could be a completely different discussion because really what qualifies you to rate something accurately?

When I go on holiday or away somewhere I tend to search for reviews of places that I'm going to visit, if they help me make a decision about if I want to go to that place or not then they're very useful to me but as I haven't actually visited that place yet (and if the review is bad won't bother) how can I know for sure that the review was really useful?
Should I not rate that review? That's a serious question. It's something that I've thought about in the past but always decided it's better to rate than just to read and not rate.

Another issue I find is when I read things that people have written about childhood. My first masters degree was in early years and when I read some of this stuff there's part of me thinking, well so and so's study on whatever disproved that or that hasn't been good practice since the eighties so do I then rate something as not useful because the person isn't an academic or a child professional and doesn't know that what they're writing is out of date or generally considered to be bad for children?

Do you see what I mean? Sometimes I feel like I can't rate something accurately because I don't know enough about it and other times like I know too much about it and I'm expecting too much from the reviewer.

I know what you mean. I think reviews you read can fall in to one of three categories:
    • stuff you know about
    • stuff you want to know about
    • stuff you've zero interest and knowledge in.
I believe you should only be reading and rating reviews if it falls into any of the first two "categories", hence my mentioning tampons and cosmetics above. If people are reading and rating anything in the third category just to return a read, then I don't see how anyone can be adding a valuable rate to the pile.

If you feel you know too much, continue to rate away! You might be the only person on Dooyoo with that level of knowledge, but that doesn't/shouldn't stop you from rating... the whole point of peer review is that every valuable rating (based on members' own opinions, desires, experiences etc.) helps add up to an overall rating that gives a good refection of the usefulness of the review. In theory, that is.
  • I see your point regarding people reading just to return a read, but I don't really see that as a problem so much as people who seem to think "return rate" means it has to be VU no matter how godawful it is and get on their high horse because they don't like being told their review isn't as VU as they think it is.

Some people on there are clearly not reading or are scared of a lower rate because some of the stuff they rate VU is just junk.

Camp Freddy- I see what you mean. I don't think I've ever come accross a review that doesn't fall into the first two for me. There are things that I have very little interest in, like makeup and food but that I know a lot about so I will try to avoid reading reviews about makeup or food but if that's all that the person I'm return rating has written about then I will read them and feel that because I know about them I can rate accurately.

There are categories on dooyoo that I have no interest in and know nothing about, like electrical appliances, but I don't think I often come accross those.

I agree with you cheap_charlie. I had one person PM me asking me to rerate her review because we've been rating each other for so long. I'm steadily losing my regular readers!

I'd seen a couple of mentions of a dedicated Dooyoo discussion forum. I know we have this thread, but it's mainly to help new users rather than just general discussion.

    So I set up a forum >here<.

    Anyone is welcome to join.

There are two already in progress:

They're not busy, but they are, as you've rightly said Fiver, probably a better resource than this thread which IMO drowns a lot of the useful information.

Anyway, those forums in full (again):
    http://www.opinionators.co.uk/mainboard/index.php
    http://reviewwritersforum.editboard.com/forum.htm

A few members that post here are already members of both the above forums (fora?) and there's already a good few year's of topics to look through too.

Thanks CF, I did look at those a while back, but I found them a bit cliquey. I thought I'd set up this forum so new Dooyoo members could find their feet without being hammered by old members (not that anyone here would do that). :)

  • Hi guys, I've started a thread about this which maybe wasn't the best idea lol, I'm just panicking a bit now!

I requested an Amazon voucher from Dooyoo (for 40 pounds) a coupla weeks back and didn't think I'd received it. I contacted Dooyoo a couple of days ago to check if they'd sent it and they've responded today with an e-mail saying that they sent it to me on the 27th March. I guess I must have deleted it accidentally and it's gone for good now. They said on the e-mail that I should contact Amazon directly with my order number, but I'm really not sure how to go about this? If anyone could help I'd be very grateful!

    Lou xx

Have you checked the deleted folder/trash folder first?

I had to contact Amazon a couple of weeks ago about some music downloads I lost because of a computer crash, they were really helpful. If you just click the help button on Amazon, the next page that comes up has a 'contact us' section about half way down.
