About £15k. Couldn't do DRO because once had a company pension (with about £200 in it!). Re-re-re-re-reconsolidated debts with spiralling interest rates.

Hid head in sand for ages. Then had to reduce hours at work due to health issues, met someone I want to spend the rest of my life with and don't want to subject him to having to hide from the doorbell or unplug the phone.

I'm now five months in, balancing the books (including at Christmas - go me!), and looking forward to a future free from unnecessary credit.
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

Missed this before, me personally I owed around £10k, but wasn't eligible for a DRO. DH around £20k, so not huge amounts really, we had owed lots more previously but sold our property and rented for a bit, then his Uncle gave is 10k to clear some of it and give us some breathing space.

But then the car needed an MOT and we couldn't afford it, so I couldn't get to work without it, although it was a personal loan Black Horse listed it on HPI so I couldn't sell it and they were not interested at all in helping us out. I got very stressed and down and was signed off work for the last 2 weeks and then couldn't get there anyway so had to leave!!

Egg doubled the interest rate on the card so the repayments also doubled and they would not let husband pay a bit less, they were not interested at all, could not have cared less in fact, and in return whacked on HUGE charges when we were late paying so in the course of a month the actual debt went up by a whopping £500!!!!! and they also refused to remove the charges, so it doesn't take a mathemetician to work out where that would have got us!! Silly thing is that if they had helped us they may have got something back but there refusal to help meant they ended up with nothing!!

So we saw a CAB Adviser and made the decision to go BR.

That is a very brief summary of course and there is more to it than that but they are the main reasons it all went pear shaped very quickly. I wish we hadn't had to and that we could have paid it back but the banks just did not want to know at all.
  • went br for 76k of which 35k was legal fees ,charges, and the heaps of interest creditors loved to pile on while i was unemployed.

was most helpful to my situation.

Thats what i can't understand, i thought that the creditors would rather have something paid to them than nothing!! and i'm suprised at how low some peoples debt was when they went bankrupt, i thought it had to be at least twenty grand.!

Are you saying that they are insured against every single defaulter and person going bankrupt i find that very hard to believe. If that was the case surely the insurance companies would go bust.
