No - nothing to do with business - the whole lot was on credit cards we had built up over many many years would you believe - we tried to keep up the repayments but couldn't in the end - thank fully we are now discharged - still living in our house (negative equity) and no bro etc!

further no-one except our children actually know - and I don't think many people would believe it, even if we told them - as we both have good jobs, live in a nice house/area etc - I sometimes feel we should have been punished in some way but we have not really had any bad effects of choosing to make ourselves br- we will never want credit again, and live totally within our means now - life is so much better than when I got a credit card statement for every day of the month etc etc

I believe that up until the credit crash last October, it was difficult to avoid all the credit being thrown at us. Yes, I know I shouldv'e said no but, am guilty of wanting things now and pay later!!

I am not looking forward to my appointment next Tuesday but, will admit stupidity!!

BTW - I am now on job seekers allowance - do I have to pay the full bamkruptcy fee??

Have you got proof? I mean a letter that with figures on it from the DWP. This must not be more than 1 month old when you go to the court. If you have all the figures and dates then you should get the discount

How? Students debts to start with, never really went away and grew. At the end it was a personal loan, overdraft and credit cards.
I don't really feel I spent recklessly - I certainly didn't end up with lots of clothes, CDs or electrical goods at the end of it. For a time (~2003) it looked like I was going to pay it off. Then some job changes, periods out of work, and things got worse.. there seemed to come a time (when I looked back) that the debt began to feed itself (especially credit card debt) and just grew and grew...
It was one year ago today, so now I'm "discharged" and debt free
For anyone on the brink, I spoke with the CCCS and they were a great help to me.
Afterwards, I got a Co-op Cashminder account and that's done me fine since then. Income is enough to live on, I'm single in a rented flat.
Is why I'm here actually, I'd be grateful for any advice on what steps to take next to rebuild my credit reputation. Had lurked for a while, but joined up so I can ask the question.
For example, should I (can I?) get a credit card, make a purchase and pay off every month to improve my standing? Any other action I should take now?

The major lenders evade responsibility for their actions yet again.

The fact that the government is spending so much of our money on advertising is proof enough that it works.

All the people here who are victims of First Plus, DFD (etc) advertising should be able to sue IMO. While that may seem cynical, it is still less than the cynicism that drove these people to keep pushing this rubbish on us for years. We are victims of the system.

Thank goodness there is still such a thing as BR really.

£55k - just on my own... think that's pretty impressive if not shocking, especially to have nothing to show for it (not proud)

Thanks for that Tigerfeet. I started a new thread (oo, my first) called "One year on - where next?" and I think this links to it: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1533895
