    Hi Wongo.
I needed a phone for my daughter so tried this today.I was only offered the difference. The strore rung cs as did I as I found it odd store cs knew the helpline lady. Both times I was quoted same as you.Told it was an error.Told policy clearly stated I hadnt been overcharged according to shelf edge label........but you could say the same about the games people were getting.Kept my receipt and copy of leaflet........sending to trading standards.Seems policy does get adapted somewhat to customer services needs.
I think Tesco is clamping down.
After 45 mins waiting i simply got my money back and returned phone. No way were they budging and better phones are to be had for the money.
  • anybody rejected on this can and should complain to Trading Standards. your local office can be found on your local authority/council's website. failing that, google it.

This is what i argued with the instore CS staff yesterday, as they banged on about it not being SEL. One of them recognised me as getting a playstation game a couple of weeks back and mentioned this. I said the "playstation games under £30" banner wasn't a SEL either but they gave me R&R for it.

Obviously their brains could not compute this information and went back to the script.

Can somebody pls tell me how pricing works. Are most of the prices done centrally and then local stores do special offers. i.e. should item x, say teabags scan at the same price at every store as done centrally, or is it up to store to do their own pricing?

It's just that I've seen products in different tesco's not on special offer at different prices and I would have thought this wouldn't be possible if product pricing done centrally. Incidentally this was a mobile phone and a cucumber to take two extreme examples!!

    Thanks in anticipaiton

Two nice new Motorola V171 mobile telephones for me today
    SEL and Till = £49.94
Reverse side of leaflet (Front has £10 off Mobiles over £50.00) has them for £39.97. Swag the leaflets for further purchases as the offer expires 19th February

And when you are at customer services picking up the phone and getting refund, don't forget to ask for a bag to recycle your old phone. They either give £5 to charity or £2.50 to charity and 250 bonus clubcard points to you

Hi Balloonist, what did you do.Did you pay for the phones then say you have charged me too much? Was going to do it today but bottled out when I realised you had to pick the phone up from CS which is where you also get refund.

The pricing is set centrally. The promotions are all also set centrally.

There are variations between stores ie, Extra and Express and certain regional variation but on the whole if you are charged £4.00 for Nescafe in Eastbourne then you should be charged £4.00 in Newcastle. Also, if a product is on promotion in one store then it should be on promotion in another different store (the exception being Metros and Expresses).

Stores can do their own variations for any number of reasons but these all have to be authorised by senior management. Sometimes promotions are arranged for one particular store or a group of stores. This again can be for any number of reasons.

Using your cucumbers as an example, it could be that one store has a large overstock and therefore has reduced them instore thus trying to entice higher sales....the price would then be set back to normal the following day.

    Hi,
Where would I stand getting a refund on these phones?
I got a few of them on R&R from different stores, but not all of the CS people scored out my receipt to say that I had been refunded. Could I just take the ones with nothing on the receipt back for a refund?

How to explain this :) Prices are held locally within the store but normally changes are made centrally. Stores are able to change prices but thats more for situations when they have for example to many apples on a Saturday afternoon and need to shift them at a low price. Normally the changes are done centrally. Different stores vary for different reasons and I'm not sure I should go to deeply into that. An extreme example would be that stores in the Republic of Ireland are priced differently to stores in England. There are assorted reasons as to why prices vary. You can take that in a number of ways. Shout if that doesn't help :)

The 'glass is half empty' people will of course claim how this is just another way for Mr T to rip them off and profit from the poor oppressed masses blah blah blah.
