Well, all I know is that I am being charged at the same rates advertised on Ebico's website and I get a 6% deduction on my bill for paying via monthly DD

    Gas prices (inc VAT):

    Sept '07 - March '08 = 2.72p .... £195
    April '08 - Sept '08 = 3.03p .... £75
    Oct '08 - March '09 = 3.77p .... £310
    April '09
    > = 3.67p

    Electric prices (inc VAT):

    Sept '07 - March '08 = 9.92p .... £290
    April '08 - Sept '08 = 11.50p .... £290
    Oct '08 - March '09 = 13.75p .... £395
    April '09
    > = 12.75p

Ok got latest 6mths bills today and I'm not happy with the huge hike in prices :(

I've filled in alongside in red the total cost of each bill for that period. My latest 6mths gas bill is actually higher than total annual gas bill for the previous 2 years

    Total annual gas bills:

    2006/2007 - £270
    2007/2008 - £270
    2008/2009 - £450 (est based on first 6mth cost)

    Total annual electric bills:

    2006/2007 - £560
    2007/2008 - £580
    2008/2009 - £780 (est based on first 6mth cost)

Also I'd like clarification from the Ebico Rep regarding this DD discount. The bills this time were formulated slightly differently, splitting each bill into two 3mth quarters just to make matters more complicated!

The first quarter (Sept-Dec) had the DD discount applied but the second quarter didn't, yet there was no deduction in the unit charge either to compensate for it. So effectively we have been charged an extra 6% for periods Dec-March on both gas and electricity bills!

It is the losing company(i.e. to whom you owe money) that can raise the objection.

If you owe Tesco for your groceries and want to pay Asda for those groceries, then Tesco might not like that arrangement.

So? Any increase above 38% is down to a change in your consumption, not the prices. You use more power when it is cold. In case you had not noticed, all suppliers were raising their prices. You may find one or two threads about that here.

Lauren has already clarified that bills produced from the beginning of this month will not include the somewhat complicated arrangement of increasing the unit charges to compensate for the DD discount the billing company would apply.

You don't and never should have got any discount for paying by DD with Ebico. Their policy is that everyone pays the same price no matter how they elect to pay.

Following changes to the suppliers billing system, bills no longer show any discount for DD. The unit charges are as per the ebico website, although they are the latest ones valid from 30 March 2009. Prior to that, the unit charge for gas was 3.590p exc vat (3.77p inc vat). Electricity prices obviously vary by region.

If you for some reason were billed at those unit charges and got a discount for paying by DD, that was an error. If you received a discount for DD, you should have been paying at a higher unit charge to compensate, which I think you were.

In your post you claim that, for gas:
    April '08 - Sept '08 = 3.03p .... £75
    Oct '08 - March '09 = 3.77p .... £310
    April '09
    > = 3.67p

    and for electricity:
    April '08 - Sept '08 = 11.50p .... £290
    Oct '08 - March '09 = 13.75p .... £395
    April '09
    > = 12.75p

Now for gas, 3.77p is the correct rate (inc vat) for Oct '08 - March '09
3.67(5)p is the correct rate from 30 March 2009
3.03p is a rate that has been increased to take account of a DD discount you received.(correct net rate was 2.856p inc vat)

For electricity, I presume this is for the Eastern Region.
13.75p was the correct rate (inc vat) for Oct '08 - March '09
12.75p is the correct rate from 30 March 2009
11.50p was an increased rate to take account of a DD discount you received. (correct net rate was 10.81p inc vat)

So if you have been billed at those rates for the period Oct '08 - March '09 and received a DD discount for the first half of that period, then that is an error and you have been undercharged.

I hope that explains things (again) :)

I've decided to switch my electricty to EDF which will save me [STRIKE]£240[/STRIKE] £180 a year. Are there any incentives for using a particular switching company? I don't use quidco or any of those cashback sites (never managed to get them to pay out!)

Has anyone used Energylinx to switch companies before? If so did it all go smoothly?

Edited to correct the savings price (see below)

    I'm back :)

Been moving house etc.. then had to wait to get broadband installed etc..

The price reductions were pitiful by all companies, including ebico, but, on low useage ebico for yorkshire area is generally cheaper, but only by £20 to £30, including the electric !!! payment via quarter cash / cheque Glad to see the electric is more nearer the mark to the rest, rather than extortionate from the previous price rise. Of course if you pay by direct debit, you can of course get the electric cheaper for low useage, same recommendations as before, scottish power.

I thought i would give my pennies worth, since its been a loooong while :)

Nice to c someone from ebico giving some input.

Are you sure you'll save that amount?

Admittedly EDF are cheaper using their Online 6 tariff where you have to agree to pay monthly by DD.

However, based on your earlier figures (£780 / 6119kWh p.a.), energyhelpline.com suggests a saving of just less than £200 per year based on 15.614p for the first 225 kWh per quarter, and 8.642p thereafter. (Again using Eastern region)
Final figure includes a discount of £8.40 p.a. for paying monthly by DD.

Infact the saving comes down even more if the £780 p.a. was based on the pre-decrease price of 13.75p per unit (i.e. 5672kWh) ... but it's still a saving of almost £180 with EDF :)

Energylinx have got it wrong assuming the tariff on Ebico is Equidual (which presumably is more expensive) and don't allow the option to choose Equipower and Equigas so anyone doing a comparison on that site need to beware.

All the other comparison sites agree with your calculation of £180 saving ;)
