I also don't get how it knows I will save £228 switching to them when they don't know what provider/tariff I am currently with?

Useless. Tells me I'll save money on a tariff more expensive than the one I have. No indication of how many kwh they're basing their calculations on. Worse than useless. Misleading.

I dont quite understand the point of this thread to be honest.

The OP asked why the standing charge is so excessive then says he is on a no standing charge tariff with a two tier unit rates system. (I know the standing charge is tied up in the primary rate but its still not a "Standing charge")

I've just run a comparison for my area (Seeboard region) based on me being on the standard tariff with E-on paying £50 a month (although I would assume the OP's is probably higer if he is electricity only), I selected Direct debit and no internet tariffs (to get a more like for like comparison) there are only two tariffs that come up cheaper one is E-ons "Energy discount" with rates of 24.476p for the first 225 kWh per quarter, and 9.335p thereafter (saving a whopping £13!) and Npowers SOL 14 that has a real standing charge of 15.82p per day (£57.75 per year) and a Unit rate of 9.345p (Saving £61 a year including their annual discount)

So really, in my area at least, E-on may not be the cheapest but you could hardly say its extortion.

E-ons rates for the same tariff as the OP in my area are 24.476p for the first 225 kWh per quarter, and 9.335p thereafter

Compare the rates with Npowers standard tariff which has rates of 16.496p for the first 182 kWh per quarter, and 13.325p thereafter and yes, the primary is a lot lower but the secondary is about 4p a unit higher and thats where most of the use goes.

People always seem to get so hung up on one particular aspect of the pricing structure without stopping to think that overall the prices arent really that bad.

£129.24 standing charge (or whatever other term you wish to use) per annum is extortion. And you sir, are wrong!

There is no way of explaining my point more clearly.

I know I'm going to get shot down for this, but if you read the whole page that the quick quote comes on you get the information you are after. You can then go through and do a detailed quote where you can specify exactly what supplier and tariff you use.
Our Quick Quote is much simpler. We assume that, like many people in the UK, you take gas from British Gas and electricity from your local supplier. We use their prices for standard products for your postcode and the yearly consumption you’ve given us to give you an idea of the money you could save by switching to us. For a more accurate quote, we suggest you use our Detailed Quote.

How strange. Now that I've done that, it shows 'No Saving' instead of the £200+ saving promised on the first page.;)

You know what's even more strange, I used the Eon site enterered monthly £50 gas and elec and it said £228 saving. Now I go to uswitch, enter same details using local pes and british gas but how come there is only a £85.35 saving?

I think people should be more courteous to the Eon reps when they discuss things with them instead of launching an attack on them. They are not the ones that make up the rules and regulations.

I am with Eon and if I don`t like how much I am being charged then I would just leave and find another supplier.

For the one with heatwise, I realise that your choices are limited as you are in rented accommodation. I would have a word with your landlord to see if you could change the meter to the economy 7. Nothing will be done to your internal wiring so I don`t see it as a problem. You won`t get 10 hours of heat/hot water but just 7. You would need to decide if you would be warm enough with the reduced hours that your storage heater charges for.

Haven't notice anyone being discourteous to the representatives (compared to their discourteous refusal to answer the actual question that is asked.)

And I suspect they get off a lot lighter than their colleagues stuck on the ends of telephones.

This I am afraid is not correct. I have checked this much out already.
