I am consideirng making a website myself. Similar to this site (not the same area of interest), it would be driven by User generated content (which is true of 99% of the content here). On an ongoing basis I would not really have to do much work except maintenance of the site, implementing new features, administering possible subscriptions, adsense, accounts etc.

However, it is a risk that it will also flop and turn out to do nothing. But I think my ideas have some distance and it's worth a shot (despite the hundreds of hours it will take developing, like any business really). Surely if I succeed, like any form of business, I'm entitled to be financially rewarded? The site in question is not as altruistic as here.

So ML has developed a site which he can now make a living off and is obviously a passion. It helps others out and has led to many people saving ALOT of money. I congratulate him on having a concept and working it through to a successful conclusion, and even more so for creating a site that benefits many thousands of visitors.

I am very grateful to Martin for giving us this fantastic free site which has helped me and many other people. I hope he earns a small fortune he deserves it , and its his business and no one elses.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Birmingham Childrens Hospital caring for my tiny and very poorly grandson who was born at 29 weeks. Thanks to them he is getting a little stronger every day.:A:A:A
  • Amount paid off my debts in 12 months = £7000:j
Percentage of this going to Martin Lewis = 0% :D

    OP do the maths
Without this site I would probably have £7000 more debt.

To echo many other posters - if you dont like the set up LOG OFF and leave us to our money saving.

Why would someone spend a large proportion of their time providing a service and not expect to be paid for it?

Martin Lewis is just as entitled to make a living by running this site as he is by appearing on TV or radio. If he were no good at what he does, market forces would soon ensure he was living on Smartprice beans.;) I also fail to see what his income has to do with anyone else. After all, we don't pay to use the site or get his e-mails, do we?

Most of you seem to be missing the point entirely.

The information and explanations all over the site, and his post in this thread show that Martin himself thinks you should ask such questions when getting advice from whatever source.
He goes out of his way to explain how the finances work because he believes its important that you should consider such things.

Its extremely relevant to understand how the person giving you advice is financed.

Don't be so busy brown-nosing to completely miss the very message Martin is giving.

You do not have to know 'how much' they're being 'financed' though, people are entitled to ask their financial advisor how they're funded but they wouldn't (shouldn't) ask them how much they're earning. Transparency is always a good thing though.

No I think you're missing the point. Did you read the first post? And then all posts that the OP made after? He/she was asking how much money Martin personally earns and that is none of his, or anybody elses business. The OP then went on to question Martins honesty etc. So I don't think it's a case of "brown nosing" - it's more that the OP was out of line and so we told him!

It is quite obvious how the person (Martin) in this case is getting financed. As he says on this page http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/site/moneysavingexpert-finance any link with a * he gets paid for IF you go to the site and purchase from it. Other links without a * are just there because they are best ones.

Compare this to other sites (e.g. Moneysupermarket for example) which only displays links that pay them. They don't give the best advice.

I think that many people have a problem with martin earning money from his site as he is an actual person that can be picked on so to speak, compared to other financial advice sites such as moneysupermarket where it is just an anonymous site.

I always ask how a site is being financed- put simply I want to know who I'm dealing with and if it doesn't add up I'll go somewhere else.

That said, the explanation given does make sense, so the OPs post is irrelevent.
Martin is earning a lot of money. Good. He deserves every penny, and if that makes me a brownnoser then so be it.

This site is just superb- any question whether it is how to cook a casserole or what spec PC you need is answered- it's one of my first ports of call for tricky questions.

The community is astounding- a lot of users I've bickered with, several I don't like, but some I consider friends, and one I am now engaged to :j

How many sites are ad free and still actually free? Not many. ;)
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine
