I'm not an expert but do sell books on Amazon as part of my job at work. We have 1200 things listed at the moment and in the last 24 hours only sold one. Some days we might sell 7 or more. Don't give up hope yet.
Hopefully someone more experienced can answer your questions though. I'd be interested in a good scanner too as I've been thinking of getting oneNot been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/1550 -
sorry , me again. I am quite new to this, silly question. She sent the email via Amazon, but I don`t seem to be able to see it on my Amazon account. DO I just go in my orders and contact her that way.0

I have approx 1500 items listed, but I List several times a week and also delist older books. My last chargeable month was my best ever with 70+ books sold. I would normally expect to sell around 40-50 books a month but at the moment I haven't had a sale since Saturday.I've just put mine on holiday settings now as I am going away, so no sales for a while for me.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Thanks for your advice so far, So does anyone think they can make a real living off of Amazon?. And would new books be better than used?0

New books are near impossible to source at any discount big enough to cover selling fees. Second hand books can do very well, I once sold a 1962 Pan paperback in an acceptable only condition for £99!
This is a just a sideline for me, although there are a few (admittedly not as many as there once was) sellers who do this for a living. They tend to have warehouse space and tens of thousands of books, some even have listing staff. If you have secure premises you might want to hang around the seller boards to see if anyone is offering pallets of used books anymore to start to build up your stock.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. >I don't use a scanner but I'm sure those that do can help you with model numbers and such like.<
I do, it's a CueCat Scanner which I got off Ebay from a USA seller for under £10. Look a bit odd but works on all but the smaller printed barcodes and making life much easier (I'm not a Pro seller BTW) when inputting a batch of items.
Right now, I'd say the postal disruption is killing Amazon Marketplace. I've put my store on vacation and am only buying with Amazon Prime fulfilment to get courier/special delivery.0 -
^ Thank you so much for the scanner info. Will be great for Amazon as well as DVD / Game household inventory software. I might even pay the kids to do the donkey work0

What would you call 'a real living'? To be honest, I think you need to spend some time reading the Amazon seller connection boards and researching back into old threads to get some idea of business models and stock sources. You don't say what kind of books/prices you've listed - are they generally 1p books or modern fiction? You need to sell an awful lot of those to make any kind of living. I started selling over 3 years ago - think it was a few weeks before I sold my first one. I don't do it full time but have learned a lot over the time I've been selling and one thing I've learned is that to make a living from it requires a lot of knowledge about a niche in particular books or very good regular stock sources or a lot of hard work, staff and storage space and/or loads of luck & no postal strikes!!!0
