UPDATE: ACCOUNT RE-OPENED BY AMAZON

Hello,

I have just had my Amazon.co.uk account closed by the company, without any warning. Here is the email they've sent me:

"My name is Liam O'Shea and I represent Executive Customer Relations within Amazon.co.uk. One of our mandates is to address the most acute account and order problems, and in this capacity your account and orders have been brought to my attention.

A careful review of your account indicates that you have required refunds on a large majority of your orders for a variety of reasons.

In the normal course of business, the occasional problem is inevitable. The rate at which such problems has occurred on your account is extraordinary, however, and cannot continue. Effective immediately, your Amazon account is closed and you are no longer able to shop with Amazon.co.uk.

Please know that any accounts related to this have also been closed. If you were to open a new account, the same will result and it will also be closed. In the event that you attempt to do so, we will not accept the return of any additional orders, nor will we issue further refunds in connection with any future orders. We appreciate your cooperation in refraining from using our web site.

If you require additional assistance, or have any concerns, feel free to contact me directly at resolution-uk@amazon.co.uk

Please do not make contact through the standard Customer Service channels again, as they will no longer be able to assist you.

Thank you for your attention to this email.
Warmest regards

Liam OShea

We're Building Earth's Most Customer-Centric Company"

Now, I have returned items in the past, but far from "majority" or "large majority" of my orders, as they claim. The only reason I have shopped at Amazon is their easy returns policy. They have at times sent me damaged, defective or badly packaged items, and those have been returned.

After having been a loyal Amazon customer for years, and having spent thousands and thousands of pounds with both the UK and the US sites, they have now closed both my accounts, without any warning.

I have not done anything illegal, or against their policy. I have not tried to defraud or trick them in any way.

I have a number of orders pending in my account. I also have over £250 in gift certificates that have been applied to my account, that I now can not access.

This mass-closing of accounts has been happening in the USA for a while, and it seems like it's come here to the UK now.

Yes, I am aware that as a private company, they can choose who they want to do business with - that's fine. However, this is not how you build, as they claim, Earth's most customer-centric company.

This has been reported to the OFT and the BBC Watchdog.

It has also been covered on a US tv station - here's a clip:

Here's a pretty heated discussion on a US website, where this has been happenning for well over a year. It's 107 PAGES so far:

Needless to say, I have replied to that email, and have called their customer services twice, where they promised someone would get back to me within 24 hours, but so far, I have not heard anything back.

I do hope this will get resolved, as I really have not done anything wrong - but be warned that this may happen to you.

Thanks!

  • Thats sounds slightly dodgy to me!! I would not click anything on the email and i would log onto Amazon through your web browser, get a number from them and call them direct. It just seems slightly strange, but id call just to make sure thats not a dodgy spam email :)

    Hey,

It's is definitely NOT a phishing email. This has been confirmed by their customer services. Also, there are no links that ask for your user info. Headers confirm this is from Amazon. Also, I have tried logging into my account and it does not work.

The tone of the email seems to be implying that you are somehow dishonestly obtaining refunds. I'd be furious.

Well, apparently, as a private company, they can do this. And that's fine. But just closing my account like this, without any previous warning or communication, is not on. And with pending and paid for orders in my account, and my gift certificate balance, there is nothing I can do, and nobody has called me back yet, as they promised.

    Ebay are just as bad.

This is what happens when two giant US corperations get to own the internet...

If there is money owed to you, you can take them to court to get it back.

    Hi,

I know that they should at least give me my GC amount back. However, I'm just disappointed and angry that they've just closed my account.
