I dont know why I should not expect my bank to bank for me?
I would refute that you have to log in every hour. If you have DD's or SO's coming out of your account, the company claiming the money will actually do this at least 24 hours in advance, it just won't come out of your account until the due date.
If you use telephone banking, select option 1 to hear transactions on your account then press 3. This will give you details of any pending transactions, including SO's and DD's that are to leave your account. eg when I ring them today, it tells me "A direct debit of £25 will be paid on the 5th of March"
Thus you only have to do this once a day, and it works for credits coming in to your account via BACS / Direct Transfer as well. Thus if you want to check that your salary will definately pay in on Friday, you can check on the Thursday.
Likewise, if you have been spending on a Debit card and the transactions have been approved but not processed on to your account then this is easy to work out. Log in to Internet Banking, select the account you are interested in and view the latest transactions. At the top of the page will be a link which says "Show account information". Click on this and it will show you your current balance, and also your "available balance" which includes authorised unprocessed debit card transactions. So, lets say my balance is £100 and I make a payment of £25 on my Maestro card. The "Account information" will show an account balance of £100 but an available balance of £75.

Oh and with regards to Dirtydaveys (you'd have to check your account every hour comment). In HSBC's case they don't charge if you go overdrawn, only if you are overdrawn at the end of the day. Therefore simply check your balance at the end of the day and you can transfer money into the account as long as you beat their 23.45 cut off time.
Not at all true.
I the other day relised that I have gone over my over draft, and so placeds money into the account. And was still charged, as I did not call to tell them.0 -
Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is totally correct but I've found that if I'm overdrawn but put the money in before close of bank, 3.30pm I think, that I don't get charged?LBM 17/02/09 Pround to be dealing with my Debts Mortgage [strike]£12061.80[/strike] £11820 MFW No 291 (OP £90.00) (March £21.57) SPA loan £25000 CCJ £4187.81 Interum Justica £2000 Council [strike]£94[/strike] £73 Incasso [strike]£85.33[/strike] £80.33 Mum [strike]£825[/strike] £800 & [strike]£38[/strike] £18 Friend [strike]£79[/strike] £49 Virtual Sealed Pot #049 £70 Sealed Pot Challenge No 645 NSD 3/22

Some people like to be victims and complain about how the evil unfair world conspires against them (be it banks, speeding tickets, parking tickets, congestion charge, tax etc.).
Other people like to be pro-active and ensure that they take responsibility for their own lives and minimise these problems wherever they can.
There will always be unfair situations, such as the level of bank charges as identified by the OFT, and we should rail against these. At the same time everyone must take responsibility for their own actions to the greatest extent possible.
Blame all your misfortune on someone else and you'll be a victim your entire life.0 -
do what iv done, cancel all your direct debits and standing orders.
then nothing can be taken out your account apart from one lot of bank charges initially from going overdrawn the month before..
put all your bills onto "make a payment" on online banking, then each week all you have to do is go online, click the ones you want to pay and the amounts, and the money disappears before your eyes.
once you have enrtered them on the make a payment section once, all you have to do it click payee and enter amount, it takes seconds.0 -
I have a second bank account and transfer the amount of the dd due out & have all the dd's coming out of the second account so I can't overdraw & know how much I have left to spend or save.LBM 17/02/09 Pround to be dealing with my Debts Mortgage [strike]£12061.80[/strike] £11820 MFW No 291 (OP £90.00) (March £21.57) SPA loan £25000 CCJ £4187.81 Interum Justica £2000 Council [strike]£94[/strike] £73 Incasso [strike]£85.33[/strike] £80.33 Mum [strike]£825[/strike] £800 & [strike]£38[/strike] £18 Friend [strike]£79[/strike] £49 Virtual Sealed Pot #049 £70 Sealed Pot Challenge No 645 NSD 3/22

I can't remember a thread on here that has made my blood boil as much as this one!
1. It's HSBC's fault if you withdraw money you don't have?! Yes they could decline your direct debit or standing order but then you'd get a returned item fee which is the same as the informal overdraft fee anyway AND possibly be charged from the company you were paying.
2. The OP claims he has only been about 5 pounds overdrawn for most charges but if you're less than 10 pound over limit they won't charge you. You say you have you charged because a charge has taken you over the limit but they also don't charge on charges. If a charge takes you over your limit they don't charge a fee in this circumstance.
3. When you open a bank account you are clearly told all the term & conditions and fees so how can you argue they aren't fair?! I might think a particular watch is overpriced so I don't buy it, I don't buy it and then say it's unfair that they have charged me the price they have quoted.
I genuinely don't understand why some people think a bank should manage there money for them. You don't ask tesco to choose your shopping for you!
They simply provide a service and if you don't want that service then don't have it. Simply open a basic bank account with no debit cards, overdrafts etc and don't use the service that they provide.
Jay, Willo, dlk and any other that thinkm its all my fault, see this:-

So, are you saying that when HSBC wrongly takes money from you (and corrects its mistake), then you are entitled to charge them, but when it happens the other way around, owing to your lack of money management, they cannot do the same?
Make your mind up. And read the terms & conditions of your account.
And actually read some of the posts from people who have suggested many ways of managing your money.
And above all, take responsibility for your own money.0 -
very interesting battle;-)) Anyway, i've tried to change DD date with my utility company( just through my internet a/c), worked well. So i'm going to do it again and with my other DDs, its quite easy when you know the date your salary goes in the a/c. It's worth trying.Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind0
