    Sorted!

As for "I have no idea how people can keep on top of what comes into and out of there banks on a minute by minute bases. I work all day". I also work all day and have DDs and SOs and all sorts coming out of my account. You don't need to log in & check every hour, just make an arrangement like the one suggested above. But don't expect a financial institution to do it all for you- take responsibility.

You really do have to log in every hour, if you are to keep on track. I have no idea how much will be taken or how much will be credited into my account per day. Due to debiters taking when they please. And due to my contract work mean I dont get paid at set times.

I dont know why I should not expect my bank to bank for me?

Put it this way, I only log in 2-3 times per week, yet I know I'll never get a single charge? Magic? No, just ensure that you have a sufficient "buffer zone" of cash so you don't get caught out. Make a list of all your DDs, and when they go out of your account.

"Banking" is not the same as managing your money. Banks do what you ask them to, no more, no less. They don't know how much you'll get paid, and exactly how much each DD will be, or how much you've spent at the supermarket. Nor should they.

Take charge back from them!! I'm really trying to help, honestly! ;)

Oh, and if "debiters take when they please":

    (a) you need to speak with your "debiters" fast!
    (b) it isn't the bank's fault - is it??

  • Definitely agree with having a separate account for bills & spending - I've been doing this for a while now and have not had one charge, so much easier to keep track of things. You just need to leave a bit of an excess in there if possible, so just in case you've forgotten to factor a payment in, there's still some money there.

Really worth doing, I used to get charged LOADS (due to being a) skint and b) a total div) but even someone as financially illiterate as me is finding this way really easy.

The taking cash out instead of your card thing really helps too as it makes things really simple - you can't spend it if you aint got it!!

Good luck, hope you manage to get on top of the charges. Basic account sounds like a good move too :)

So many people on here take the defence. And I wonder why they visit a site like this if they disagre with every thing about it.

I take your point. But for some people "having a buffer zone" of cash is just not a reality.

And also try ringing some companys like Barcklycard for example and getting them to give you a set date you can expect the money to be taken.

I think you disunderstand me though, I am not asking my bank to sort my finances. I AM asking them to opertate as any other compnay would. IF I DONT HAVE MIONEY DONT MAKE THE PAYMENT. This way i can make the payment by self by some other means, or at I time when I do have money.

The bank tell me its a serivce that they provide, but I dont want it.

If you mean Barclaycard, they always send me a statement saying the amount and when they will take payment, well in advance.

could you not call all the companies you pay by direct debit to change the date they take payment to something like the day after you get paid or at least within the first week after payday, then all you would need to do is check the account once a month on a certain date. then all the money left in the bank would be yours.

i bank with both hsbc and barclays, and it annoys me that barclays decline payments if theres insufficient funds cos it then means i sometimes get charged from companies for late payments or i have to call them and make payments manually or pay over the counter in the post office, i prefer it that hsbc allow the payments to be taken - ok so i get charged but its easier and much less hassle in the long run! plus if they decline a payment you're going to get charged anyway so the money may as well be gone, it doesnt make a lot of difference at the end of the day.

Plenty of other posters have offered the solution to your problems - refer back to having two accounts, using cash, opening a "basic account" etc etc

Couple this with my suggestions on DDs, and you have the answer.

If you don't want to take their sound advice, or mine, then good luck with battling the banks for months to come, and all the associated hassle.

The point is, no-one is going to do this for you. It's up to you to take control.

Oh and please don't accuse me of "disagreeing with everything on this site" - that is just nonsense.

I work to a very tight budget, a lot of my DD's come out at different times of the month and my wages are variable so I have to be very careful.

On payday I see how much is in my account and then take off any pending payments for the month and I know how much I left to play with until the end of the month. It is my responsibilty, not the banks.
