Well, I have such big plans for today. I've not been here for most of the last 3 weeks, so not much day to day sorting out, cleaning and catching up has been done. Will engage ds's services if he looks like he's not too busy with physics revision, music practise, charging his gran's car battery etc etc etc. I will write a list! DH did some washing while I was away, so I just need to sort and fold. More to go on of course.

I also have quite a bit of cooking to do, building blocks, plus getting 5 kg of mince that I got in Costco yesterday. WIll have to check out the recipes, though I know that burgers have run out.

I want to get my new dressmaker's dummy made to size as well, but don't know if there will be time for that. DH is going to pub with his mate tonight, ds doesn't have band, so nice long evening for me.

Tea will be Delia's thick onion tart, ds spotted the recipe. A 'child' that loves onions in any shape or form! side dishes? don't know. Quiche screams 'salad' to me, but ma boys don't see it quite the same!

have a good day folks, may all your difficulties be small ones.

  • Back again - must get up & moving in a minute though.

Taplady, good luck to your DS!!!
Kazonline, I'm sure your friends will understand - and if they don't, then perhaps that's for the best... But welcome back :)

Silvercharming, I make my cheese sauce much the same way as redruby, although haven't tried it with mustard. My DD's are also capable of making cheese sauce from scratch, which makes me stupidly pleased, as I never got the knack to make it without lumps until a few years ago.... (so I always used to use packets...!!!!) By the way I see we found each other on Twitter - not that I've been on it again the past few days.. still deciding what I make of it....

Silver, my cheese sauce, is very simple, I don't even measure, just do it all by eye, I put butter flour and milk in a pan all at the same time, and stir continually over a low heat, you MUST keep stiring otherwise it goes lumpy, I add a bit more of what ever it needs as I am going along, more flour to thicken or milk to dilute, once its at the consistancy I like i add a good strong grated cheddar, and any odd bits of cheese I have hanging around, stilton is a good one, then I add a t spoon of mustard, and one of wholegrain mustard ......voila not a technical recipe at all, but it works for me xx

That's what I've been doing, redruby and squiggly, but my sauce always seems to lack 'ooomph'! (It's never lumpy though :D) Maybe I need to experiment a bit with the quantities of cheese and mustard. Never mind, I've got 3 kilos of stilton in the freezer, bought just after Xmas from a Mr T who was desperate to get rid of it!

    Good luck Taplady's son xx

Kazonline, I know exactly what you mean, I suffer from depression as well. I've lost a lot of friends because by the time I feel able to get back in contact they've 'moved on'. I've found that the friends who stick with you are the only ones worth keeping. True friends can just pick up where they left off last time xxx

Mmmm purpleivy, which Delia book is that in? It sounds delish!

Dave's gone now :( but Avon delivery is here, the only thing that was actually for me was some cheap but gorgeous bubblebath, guess which is the only item missing from the delivery

I'm the same... even facebook doesn't seem all that to me. I think here is friendlier, and easier to keep track of. And has anyone else realised how boring 'celebrities' are? :rotfl:

It's in the older one, Complete Cookery COurse, though I expect that being Delia, she has it re-hashed in another book somewhere. I often look at a book of hers and see stuff that looks familiar. Consequently I haven't bought any recently...Also have the Book of cakes, a very old paperback copy that I had before I was married (so 22+ yrs), summer, winter and Xmas.

I find choosing what to eat the most tedious bit of the whole catering process, so it was really helpful for ds to sit and plan out what he fancied and have his input. he'd looked at the Delia book when we were at friends the other day.

Found it online! It's here for anyone else whose interested: http://deliaonline.com/recipes/thick-onion-tart,1259,RC.html

Does look very tasty! I wonder if it will freeze?! I might try making one today and freezing it.

And you were right about it being in loads of her books - three according to her website ;) I only buy cook books if I can get them second-hand, but I still have a shelf-full! Actually, I do buy the river cottage handbooks new, but they don't count :o

    Good morning all :hello:

Some of you were talking about that Amish programe that was on...I really enjoyed it but their daughter having leukaemia had me in tears. I have ordered a book from amazon called "plain and simple: one woman's journey to the Amish" it had great reviews and is about a normal working mother in america who wanted to live a more simple life so lived with them for a while and the book is about what she learned. It is coming from the US though so could take 20 days to arrive.

Have a good day all xx

I have read this book, in fact its in my book case its an excellent read and gives a very good idea of the life of an Amish woman from an 'outsiders' point of view.

Amish women are brought up to be 'strong' they are the hub of the house and everything revolves around them, cooking, cleaning, child rearing, they help with jobs around the farm and also many of them are taught to quilt. What is fascinating to me is that when 'srping cleaning time' comes round to 'spring cleaning time' the neighbouring women will gather up thier mops and dusters and all pile in to help............so each house gets a good turn out, with the hostess providing lunch for the ladies, when one house is finished, they just go on to the next...........what a brilliant idea!!!

They are also responsible for looking after hens etc, most Amish women regard the eggs as pocket money, so after they have used what the family needs the money goes into the goodie tin. Growing veg also comes high on the list. They often have very large families, I am not too sure of their attitude to birth control, no really researched in that but like Catholics they regard children as a gift from God, so growing fruit and veg is essential.

The Amish pay taxes but do not contribute to the 'health insurance', as was shown in the film, where the family gave their money to a family who were having problems, the community helps to pay medical bills.........if there is a building destroyed by fire, the whole community will attend for a 'barn raising' and they will build a barn in a day, the women gather to cook the meals and will often sit around a quilting frame and help to quilt..........I have a book of pictures which shows women doing just that, the quilt frame can be carried outside if the weather is fine and the ladies will sit in a row, each one working on 'thier bit' of the quilt.

Sorry another long message, I get a bit carried away on this subject............. it is an abiding interest for me, I would love to have done what the lady in 'Plain and Simple' did, its difficult to get an Amish family to accept an English, thats what they call anyone who isn't Amish, to live as part of the family. They are very protective of their way of life and their privacy.

  • Morning all

I really wanted to see that Amish programme but unfortunately I missed it, does anyone know if it's on catchup?

Shopping this morning with my mum but the cupboards are pretty much well stocked so not a lot to get but a good time to keep an eye out for any bargains.

Kaz you know darn well this friend will always be here waiting for you to poke your head back out of your shell again. You've always been there for me in the past and you will always mean the world to me. XX
