What to buy in Tesco Value Range

You'll need to read the first thread that Pink has linked to for everyone's favourites as I posted a few of mine in there that I remembered as the thread went along.
Perhaps this can get merged with that one?
Alternatively there is a huge long thread in the shopping boards about Aldi/Lidl/Netto favourites.0 -
Here it is!!!! http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1501040

Hi everyone
I wasn't really sure which thread to attach my question to, as there seems to be a few about Tesco Value goods. Hope this is in the right place and someone can help me.
What I'd really appreciate is some advice about the Value S.R flour. I went shopping in Tesco's today and needed flour as I do a lot of home baking. I started to reach for my usual McDougalls flour at approx 70p per bag and then remembered my new O.S pledges to myself. I compromised and picked up a bag of Value flour at 27p per bag. I then panicked and bought a bag of both. Can anyone tell me if the Value S.R flour is any good? I can buy almost 3 bags of Value for one of my normal ones and if it's any good then I must definitely convert and make yet another saving. What I don't want to do is do a large batch of baking, only to find my cakes are flat as a pancake and heavy as lead
I'd really appreciate anyone's input on this.
Thanks in advance. I'm trying to be good and become O.S but I do struggle as I have always been a 'brand name' goods person0 -
it's fine. just make sure that you sieve it.0

Hello BrokeBrunette
As you've already purchased both the value flour and branded flour, why don't you do a test bake. If the preparations and baking times are identical all you need to do is make sure you can tell which flour was used when you look at/evaluate/taste the cake(s).
If you mark the baking trays so that you can tell which cake was baked using the value flour and which cake was baked using the branded flour.........you'll have your answer.
I used to work in a flour mill and the Master Baker did a test bake most days, to evaluate how the different grades of flour performed. I always got to pick a nice (freebie) loaf to take home too.:D
Happy Baking.

I have used the value SR flour and its fine, I also buy the value baked beans, sweetcorn, tin toms, batter mix, jam and sweet & sour sauce and find it just as good as any others but a lot less money.

Thanks Sarah and Nile for your replies.
Nile - I never thought about doing a test bake for both, but that's a good idea. Thanks very much
Sarah - I never use any flour without sieving it, so am hoping the Value flour will be fine. Just wish I hadn't been an idiot and bought both0 -

sorry, my post crossed with yours.
Thanks for the reply. I'm going to use the Value flour first.I'm definitely getting braver with Tesco Value stuff0 -
Well previously I have only bought non-food items and found them to be excellent! Metal soap pads (35p for 15), pan scourers (14p for 5) and foil (nice and cheap I remember!). I've now moved onto certain value food items, such as golden syrup, sultanas and pizza bases, where I know that there's not going to be a lot of difference in the ingredients from the more expensive items!Official DFW Nerd Club #20  Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts

As there seems to be some confusion about both of these threads being current, I will merge this one into the other what to buy in tesco value thread.
