Thanks thriftlady, is there a difference in this and the more well known brands apart from the price. If there is'nt i can't see the point in paying (an extra £5.00 ) i think.
  • Sorry miacat,I don't drink vodka often enough to know the difference.

I bought it in order to make rhubarb vodka following the success of my quince vodka in the Autumn!(I steep fruit and sugar in the vodka,or other spirit for 3 months, strain and you have a lovely fruit liqueur) ;)

Have to say, I wish the Value ranges had been around when I was a student. I did my degree in West London in the late 1980's and it was a choice of Waitrose  , or a really grotty Tesco. Even then, Tesco did have the Value range - it was still called Basics then, but the choice was very poor - I can only remember there being crips and they were awful!! Food was expensive and i reckon, 16 years on, I can live more cheaply (terrible grammar - sorry!) than I did then.

I did my list further back in the thread, and, I reckon I could almost shop 100% Value now if I really had to. I proably do about 40% Value products each week, but I might have a go on my next shop to see if I can up the number of blue and white stripes in the trollet!

I will be stepping back into a supermarket for the first time in weeks next Saturday as I've been having home deliveries and collecting the points, but with the code thread gone, I'll be back to shopping in store and I think I might set myself the challenge of spending as little as possible and seeing how I get on!

Keren, sorry to go off topic but do you know what's happened to the Tesco Code thread? I have it in my favourites but its disappeared?

i make my own homemade vanilla essence by steeping vanilla pods in cheap vodka... i slit them down the center (lengthwise) and toss them in

    very potent stuff mmmmmm

when you remove the vanilla pods let them dry out then put them in an airtight container with sugar for vanilla sugar mmmm mmmm mmmm

think i'll have to give your fruit liqueur a try thriftlady!

Hi all - I will be joining the grocery challenge next month and my aim is to spend £40 a week for 2 adults and a 6 month old (including nappies!!).

I shop at Tesco and have recently taken the plunge and started trying the 'Tesco Value' items (why do they have to make them look so cheap?? Sainsbury's do a much better job with their 'basic' range). I have been pleasantly suprised - have bought tomato sauce, bran flakes, toilet roll...tried their squash, but it was so weak we pretty much got through a bottle in 2 days.

Anyhow, perhaps you could let me know if you've tried some of these products, which ones you found good value and which ones you wouldn't touch with a barge pole! I munched my way through a Tesco (not value) Fruit & Nut bar the other day, it was 48p, compared with around £1.50 for a Cadbury's version ! extortionate!

There is a thread somewhere on the board with all the yay and nay to Tesco Value items. Search Tesco Value and you'll find it.

Dont touch the squash - its far too weak. I do buy tomatoes, baked beans, sweetcorn and never had a problem with them. Have you a Lidl's near you they do some good cheap tinned products.
