i just found a 'new' one, well for me!

i have no idea why i bought it but quite some time ago i bought a tesco value sponge mix

i normally make the microwave sponge but i'm trying to clean out my kitchen cupboards so i thought i'd use it up

anyway, it is the BEST sponge i've ever had! the texture is very similar to angel food cake (my favourite) from the states and the taste is also quite similar!

it's so good that i think i may stop making the microwave sponge

the tesco value sponge is only 27p plus you add one egg

to make up my own mix i have to do a double amount (to get the same volume) so that's 2 eggs plus butter (only add one egg and water to tesco's)

my two eggs alone cost me 26p plus the butter costs me at least 30p so hey, bargain AND it tastes like angel food cake :T

ok, i need to get out more... but i'm just so chuffed to find a suitable substitution for my favourite cake, i haven't had angel food cake for the entire 7 years i've lived here!

The Tesco value items I buy are:

    pasta
    tomatoe puree
    porridge oats
    chocolate digestives
    mushy peas
    flour
    chopped tinned tomatoes.

I used to buy the tinned plum tomatoes too, but on a few occasions the tomatoes had in them what looked like holes made by some kind of insect, that put me off a bit!

Just wanted to thank who ever recommended the value box of chocs.

Had some last night, and they're great for 99p. Could have had a few less coffee ones, mind you, but any box of chocolates could have less coffee ones as far as OH and I are concerned.

I checked out the value plain choc digestives ingredients ,which i have been buying for a long time now and could'nt believe they are better then the well known brand (as well as tasting better) it seems we are paying for the extra additives!
callyw...the biscuits jumped from 25p to 34p in 1 week.

I found in Sainsburys in the basic range milk Chocolate digestives 300g pkt for 25p. Bought some only so I could taste test them to report back to you :rotfl:

    Very nice.

But did not see any plain ones though.

    Forgot to say:

the value gin is also excellent and members of my family who are brand snobs haven't noticed the difference!

I suspect putting it through a water filter will make it even better.

As that all they do with things that are trippled flitered like vodka etc.

  • Re "Tesco Value Me" on the last page... :p

What a disappointment! Surely someone on this forum could do it as an experiment and show how well you could eat for that! Eg Sarahsaver or MATH, who could probably do it with their eyes closed. l might have to try it myself when DH goes away on work again (he claims to be allergic to Value/Smartprice products..hmm)

I mean, Tesco Value MANGOES?? I remember when I was a poor student the first time..you could just about get bread, squash, UHT milk, OJ and a few other things :D
  • We have bought some Value Products but you need to check the salt content on some of the tinned products. It is alot higher than the branded products so if you need to watch your salt intake for health reasons then you may want to steer clear.

Have tried and don't like tea

I know the guy who *does* like Tesco value tea!! (sounds like he is a one off on this as in many other ways... ;))

bylromarha - I would always be happy to send you an SAE and some bubble wrap to take care of those inconvenient coffee chocs in the value selection box... :D
