I think it really comes down to personal preference as well, you get loads of people on here saying they can't tell the difference between economy/value something and a more expensive brand, whereas others can tell the difference. I have always hated cheap pasta (value stuff and those really big bags of cheap stuff, that remind me of the pasta they used to sell as dog food in Italy) so would rather spend a bit more as pasta is a cheap meal anyway.

Haven't tried Tesco tinned tomatoes but I found that Sainsburys ones are very watery too.
Not tried Nettos either but totally agree with helen81 that the Lidl ones are lovely and the last time I got them they were the same price as the Sainsburys ones. 15p for chopped ones. Last time I went to Sainsburys though they were 17p. Not been to Lidl for a while but I'm sure someone else will be able to tell us the current price of the chopped and tinned tomatoes from both places.

I find that the chopped value ones are watery but buy the plum ones and chop them myself and its better and there is not so much watery sauce.

If you're fussy about washing up liquid Iceland do two bottles for a pound and its really good stuff, I dilute it slightly with water and it still cleans as well as Fairy. They also do a 1kg spread called "What! Not Butter?!" for £1. The only two things I get from there but worth the special trip if you have one nearby.

I think a lot of things are down to preference really.

I used to work with someone who previously worked for a washing up liquid company. He said that the cheaper ones they made were the same but more watered down. I'm using Fairy at the moment (my Mum gave it to me for Christmas) and I'm considering watering it down because I can't use a small enough amount and end up with millions of bubbles so there could be an advantage to having watered down washing up liquid.
  • :T Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda all do their own pasta sauce at about 25p a jar and it knocks Dolmio's into fits. I regulary cooks some past, throw over 1/2 jar of this pasta sauce with a handful of grated cheese. Delicious and cheap. Am new to this site and am amazed at some of you guys. Been through some scary money times myself but can now see the light at the end of the tunnel but will still keep looking for money saving tips. Thanks everyone
