can anyone tell me what I need I have joined up with tiscali and have sagem modem with only usb connection and i wanna go wireless please help I bought a belkin router but its ethernet only i thought it would be so simple

You can still use the router but will have to configure a slightly different netwrok using Windows Interent Connection Sharing (ICS).

    The structure:

    ADSL Internet Line>>>>USB Modem>>>>PC>>>>>Ethernet Router>>>>Other network computers

Its not difficult to set up, but note that you will have to have the PC on in order to have the rest of the network connected.

If you run into difficulties, try calling Belkin Support [Indian call centre] which is free and they might guide you step by step.

Just set this up and working a treat so far. Installation went fine from start to finished, took 5 mins max.
My other questions is this though. Ive always used ZoneAlarm when I was connected directly to the net. I understand the router has its own firewall, so can i finally drop ZoneAlarm and unintsall it as i guess its no longer needed. Im currently running with both router and ZoneAlarm and they seem to be working happily together?.

Sorry im not very techie when it comes to routers!

I've got a netgear router ( not wireless ) and I still have zone alarm for the purpose of knowing which programs are trying to get on the internet at any time - it doesn't have anything to do ( at the moment anyway ) for incoming attempts as I also have a firewall at my ISP - Metronet. You can never be too careful. I also use Opera web browser which is great for identifying security threats - such as "secure " sites with weak or outdated encryption - one such was the "1899" telephone site when it first started ( it's o.k. now ).
  • Please can anyone help.

I am on AOL Broadband silver, and have purchased the dell and a 3COM officeconnect adsl wireless router, I am having problems connecting the wireless up. The AOL modem is a BT Voyager 105 with a adsl line in and a usb line out, but on the back of the router there seems to be no usb connection.
AOL has said that AOL silver does not support wireless and that I would have to upgrade, but I think they are just trying to make a bit of money.
Can any of you technical MSEr's give me a hand on how to set this up.

    Cheers everyone

    Steve,

This is an ethernet router. Unfortunately you will not be able to use it with a USB ADSL modem :( You will need to gat an ethernet modem if you want to us it with this router.

You best option might me to get a combined wireless router/modem. They are not much more expensive, and you have one less box to get in the way.

Actually, yes you can use it (see my post above about Internet Connections Sharing) the only difference is that your PC connected to the USB Modem must be running for the rest of the network to be connected.
It is very simple to set up, windows XP has a wizard and you should perhaps do a couple of searches for more detailed instructions

    Hi Doublespresso,
Thanks for the advice but I am still really stuck, I think I have set up the router correctly, with my modem still connected to the computer, when I put on my laptop it connects to my 3com router, but I dont know what to do, and to be honest all I want ot be able to do is connect to the internet and dont really know what the router does or how I link the two computers. I seem to have a bridge connection now showing in my network connections but I still cant seem to do anything, the led on the front of the router "online" is not illuminated.
Please help mate as I am starting to pull my hair out.

    Cheers mate

    COPPERS459,

I take it that you're not using Belkin router in your setup, instead a 3COM OfficeConnect ADSL router .. if yes, then the two answers given above are not correct. My suggestion is to take you question into Techie Stuff forum.. you'll get a confusing answer here because you're going off topic (The original topic is still on Belkin 54G router that PCWorld sells for £34.99).

Has any one tried one of these with a Nintendo DS or a psp? The nintendo wi-fi site says it is not compatible.
Looking for a total solution for pc's and game consoles at this sort of price or less!!

It works great with our psp ... don't know about the DS though, as we don't have one.

    Hi

I bought one of these (version 4000) from PC World at the cheaper price. However I have been having problems with this from day 1. The router seems to de-power (as some other people have mentioned on this thread too) routinely if I try and use the network connection from my laptop for any length of time. The problem does not occur if I use the connection from my PC which is connected to the cable modem (via the router).

I contacted the Belkin helpline but they could only suggest a hard reset which does'nt help a lot. I am tempted to go in to PC world to get this replaced.

Anybody has a clue what the problem could be or resolved the same ? Any help would be appreciated.

When you say it "de-powers" do you mean it physically switches off?.

I dont know why a router would power itself off as it the sort of thing that would have to start up in a instant if required, and this would cause more problems that it was worth. The router itself consume virtually no power, so again, why would it timeout, switch off, or go into any power saving mode.

Ive actually bought this router too. Had it running since Friday, had a PC hooked up to it since that time, checked again this morning, all working perfectly. It even found 4 additional wireless networks in the vacinity, all unsecured i might add!.

Dont know if its worth mentioning, but have you checked the power saving features on your laptop?. It power saving it switched on, that could cause problems as the laptop goes into power saving mode and comes out of it again?.
