  • ive posted before and paddymcc has rlly helped me but im still a little confused and dnt wanna annoy him..... all help would be grealty appreciated....

    1. Were you using the NTL broadband connection before you bought this router i.e. connecting directly from the cable modem to your laptop?
    2. Have you bought the right router? Belkin do various versions and some are for ADSL not cable. If you paid £35 for it then it should be the right one.
    3. Technically I don't believe you need the NTL CD as my installations have always failed using that and I had to confgure it whilst receiving instructions from NTL over the phone.

    Hope that helps.
    Cheers

no i just wanted to use my broadband from the pc to my laptop...

i paid £50 and it just says asdl/cable on the box??

will ntl talk me thru it??
Hi, my names katrina and I'm a spendaholic!? Trying to save!?! still havent managed it!! :o

Sorry, i meant are you using an existing working NTL cable broadband connection from any computer in your house? Sounds like you are from your PC?
The new router should be able to supply both the PC and laptop, without the PC being turned on. You will need to disconnect the PC from the NTL cable modem or set top box. Then connect the modem\stb via an ethernet cable to the router. Your PC should also then be connected via an ethernet cable to the router too, assuming your PC has an ethernet port. The instructions supplied with the router should be fairly comprehensive and straight forward.

    2. i paid £50 and it just says asdl/cable on the box??

Was £50 including the wireless card too? Does it say Cable\ADSL or Cable\DSL on the box and can you see the model number F5D7230UK4? If you told NTL ADSL when it states DSL then they might have got confused and thats why they told you it was the wrong one.

    3. will ntl talk me thru it??

Depends, as I've been through this a couple of times I know what I want and should be getting. If you are inexperienced then you might get fobbed off. But maybe you don't need their help.

    Cheers

The boxes are confusing, yes belkin do a combined ADSL modem/ router that looks the same.
You can connect the router to an adsl modem if it has an ethernet port, which is what i do or to an NTL modem as I used to do.
    You don't need NTL CD!!!
  • i'm still stuck! Got everything plugged in, comp said LAN all connected but broadband ntl disconnected.....
  • Are you just connecting PC to NTL Modem via ethernet cable as I suggested.
This si what you need to do first to establish that your ethernet card in PC is OK
If so take out your USB connection & re-cycle (Power off/On) PC & Modem.
If you still can't get connection send me a Personal message

you have to be carefull when purchasing items like this !! its not just a case of pc-world (or any retailer) having this on at a good price. the reason is that the 54mbps is being replaced with a higher 108mbps.

also, now the 802.11b and 802.11g is ALSO BEING OUTDATED. THERE WILL BE A NEW 802.11n. this will be able to send signals through thick brick walls (so REALLY GOOD FOR OLDER HOMES) and receive them at a very good rate - unlike the 802.11b/g which get worse when walls are added into the equation.

Some of you may have heard about the 802.11n version but a lot of you will not have yet !! the manufacturers are still deciding on a standard format so the 'n' may be soon be outphased also....but not for a couple of years i'd say !!

hope this helps anyone really thinking of what to buy....especially those of you who live in older built homes !

    good hunting !

Why are you posting it again then? Don't forget most people want this for use with their broadband to connect to the internet and most broadband speed is around 2Mbps anyway so 108Mbps isn't going to be of much use to them. I still quite happily use an 11b card in my laptop and my main desktop has an 11b card in it as well and that quite happily streams mpeg2 video. As for going through walls, yes some routers are worse than others but if it doesn't work then take it back, if it does work then you've got a bargain.
