you dont have to unplug anything to do with your hard drives, you must be reading that wrong,as you want to use ethernet from pc to router.

    lol, I meant pc!

What's USB, your existing Cable Modem -> PC connection? Ultimately you should be able to connect like this ....

For initial config : Cable Modem --(ethernet)--> Belkin Router --(ethernet)--> PC.

I think once the Cable Modem is setup then you should be able to use either the Ethernet or USB so switching from USB to ethernet shouldn't be an issue. As long as you have enough ethernet cables.

As it was quite late last night we left it. Plugged in the ethernet and had no internet connection, this may be because we left the usb cable plugged in. Going to try it without it in...
  • Try ethernet connection from modem to pc first before using router, to ensure it all works.
  • yeh i can vouch for the belkins signal strength..... ive been using my neighbours connection for months now... all over my house!!!... my laptop always connects to their 'belkin54g' unsecured wireless connection!!... lol.. make sure you secure yours with a password!

We have secured ours :) Good point tho, for anyone who hasn't already done this.

Without making you disregard the belkin instructions entirely. It might be good to do a power cycle of the cable modem once your have plugged it into the powered belkin router and also have the PC hanging off one of the routers four ethernet switch ports.
If the cable modem -> router is working correctly then on the routers default admin page (http://192.168.2.1) the "Internet Settings" panel should be automatically filled in with the dynamic address etc provided by the cable modem. This assumes that the router has been able to assign a dynamic address to your PC as well (to allow you to log into the admin panel).

Not sure if this is just complicating things more. I would advise following the belkin instructions though if you are a bit unsure.

    Cheers

you have tobe carefull when purchasing items like this !! its not just a case of pc-world (or any retailer) having this on at a good price. the reason is that the 54mbps is being replaced with a higher 108mbps.

also, now the 802.11b and 802.11g is ALSO BEING OUTDATED. THERE WILL BE A NEW 802.11n. this will be able to send signals through thick brick walls (so REALLY GOOD FOR OLDER HOMES) and receive them at a very good rate - unlike the 802.11b/g which get worse when walls are added into the equation.

Some of you may have heard about the 802.11n version but a lot of you will not have yet !! the manufacturers are still deciding on a standard format so the 'n' may be soon be outphased also....but not for a couple of years i'd say !!

hope this helps anyone really thinking of what to buy....especially those of you who live in older built homes !

    good hunting !

Did this, doesnt work! The cable box has a green light that turns on when the ethernet is plugged in so not sure what the problem is?
  • Router Depowering

Bought the Belkin router along with a laptop card when the offer was on and set it up yesterday. Communication was good but router depowered every 15 minutes or so even when not surfing. Router power had to be restored by pulling out and replacing the mains plug. I phoned the Belkin helpline today and was told that Belkin were aware of this problem and was advised to return it to pcworld and exchange it for version 2000 or version 3000 (mine was version 4000). Unfortunately for me pcworld only had version 4000 in stock. Has anybody else had this problem? and have you managed to cure it? My provider is NTL and I have 1 Meg broadband and located in Swansea(if relevant). Thanks for any comments.
