  • Thanks everyone, I reserved one on monday & someone picked it up for me yesterday - so I got it at the lower price. I should bloomin well think so too, as when I opened the box it had obviously been used already. The bags were ripped open, there was dust on the feet of the router & the (road-map like) instuctions were all creased. Bad show, pcworld. Luckily everything works (posting now, using pda over wpa secure network).

p.s. it doesn't look like the picture, but the model number tallies up.

Did anyone else get the 'you are attempting to do a firmware upgrade with an uncompatible version' when you did an upgrade.
Tried the UK and the USA version...zilch!!
I'm beginning to think they've put the wrong router in the box.
    It's a version 4000Uk model...anyone updated this yet.
    Thanks for any help.
  • I've had the exact same problem myself mate. There must be a way to update without using the web interface.

p.s. was yours little, & with a single antenna ?

I had exactly the same happen to me with the Netgear DG834GT offer that was on a while back. Got the unit home and found that it had already been opened up. Looked closer and the barcode on the bottom clearly stated it was a used product.

Took it back to the store and they changed it but couldn't understand why it had gone through the till at the same price as a new product.
if i had known then what i know now

You need a router that's ADSL only, it's got the ADSL modem built in. The linksys will do the job, was £39.99 last week, gone up to £49.99,

Just set this up and working a treat so far. Installation went fine from start to finished, took 5 mins max.
My other questions is this though. Ive always used ZoneAlarm when I was connected directly to the net. I understand the router has its own firewall, so can i finally drop ZoneAlarm and unintsall it as i guess its no longer needed. Im currently running with both router and ZoneAlarm and they seem to be working happily together?.

Sorry im not very techie when it comes to routers!
  • It's worth keeping zonealarm mate. I also use ZA free version, can't be too careful :)

If you're going wireless remember to set some form of security, wep is good wpa is better. Also when you've set everything up & can connect with your other wireless device (laptop, pda, fridge) it's a good idea to turn off "ssid broadcast" which is basically a beacon from your router saying here I am. I'm impressed with my router, I'm just waiting for a pap2 for cheap phone calls :)
