and extra memory makes it work faster is that right.....
(sorry, OT, but I'll veer it back....)0 -

Is it much faster with more memory.
I have bought 1GB on Ebay for £53, and seems a bargain.(no more left)
Cheapest place I have found for 1GB memory 533MHz DDR2 is £60.74 inc postage here:-

Some advice on re-installing, you dont need no back up media from dell if you already have an XP cd just copy the "drivers" folder (that can be folder in the root of C:\) onto some removable media, format, re-install then re-install the drivers that you backed up.
Doesnt take long at all really0 -
Use Control Panel, Add/Remove programs to get rid of Norton or Macafee, then AOL, Tiscali and Wanadoo.
Also remove My Way search assistant and decline the Dell service thing.
Get rid of the Dell background (right click, properties) and reset Internet Explorer start page to Google or BBC news (Tools, options).
Search Google for AVG free, download, install and update.
There are a couple of Windows security updates which will start arriving on a broadband connection, the second is a big one, if you're on dialup it will arrive over the next few days.
Clear up the other unnecessary shortcuts on the desktop.
Takes about 30 minutes, computer will then stop arguing with you.
Macafee is a pain, you need to go into Virus Scan settings, tell it not to start automatically, then restart before it will allow you to remove it. Ridiculous!
EDIT: While you're at it, make an XP backup. You have the option to burn one Windows XP disk using Start, All Programs, Dell Accessories, Dell OS recovery CD.0 -
do you get mcafee with it?
woman on phone told me you didn't and I could buy it as an extra for £35....
I thought it was good... I only have norton to put on (which is on main comp) but I hate it...0 -

It's a trial version, will slow the computer down and start demanding money in a few months.
Norton and Macafee are both awful, I wouldn't have them even if they paid me.0 -
I have bought 2 of these laptops and never ordered the additional resource cd that has windows XP on as I understand it.
It seems I may only be able to use windows restore to an earlier point or a dell restore to an earlier point, although I am not 100%.
Doing a clean format every now and then is an option I would of preferred as a last option of choice should I have problems.
I received 2 cds but I do not think I can use any of them to do a clean format, any know what I can do?0 -
I'm really sorry for being dense here, but why would anyone want to pay more for something than just picking up the phone. As soon as you tell them that you've spoken to customer services and they're able to track the call by your own phone number, there is no hard sell.
Honest - you just get the laptop.
Would someone either confirm I'm right or wrong on this?
From your quote: I tried this and it didn't work. And I mentioned customer services twice! Very fed up!0 -

As described earlier in the thread, you don't need to buy the disk from Dell, you have the option to burn one Windows XP backup disk using Start, All Programs, Dell Accessories, Dell OS recovery CD.0
