    Hi Slojo,

    1. Difficult. Laptops are pretty much full integrated.... you can add memory and occasionally you can upgerade the processor. Beyond that no.

    2. The games would be 50/50. older games would probably run, the lack of a dedicated gfx card is where you will have the problem. For the other purposes this machine would probably be fine. A direct desktop replacement it is not tho. Much smaller screen, lower power than that pentium at a guess, but with the addition of a dvd-rw.

Although to be fair that pc wouldnt be worth alot on the second hand market so why not keep both??

    1. Could I upgrade the gfx card easily later? An upgraded card does not seem to be an option on this machine when you buy it, at least online.

    2. I'd probably get the N02135a machine for £397 with 15.4" screen, so only a little smaller than my 19" CRT (viewable area probably only about 17"), more memory and more disk space.

    Does this change your advice?

I will probably keep both for the mo, but look to replace the bulky desktop one in the long run. It's a space issue more than anything.

    FYI

You will never be able to change the gfx card in this or i think any other laptop (certainly that i have ever seen).

Also I think kingkano i wrong this laptops Celeron-M 1.5 is quicker/faster than your current desktops 1.9 Pentium 4 IMHO.

    1. Id haev to say no on this pricepoint (i doubt it has any slots or anything inside it).

the extra screen memory and HD helps, but they are all still slower than a desktop. I guess you will only find out when you try it really!! Space wise, way better of course ;) but laptops of this spec are inherently slower than desktops even of the same spec....

its all opinions. Id probably suggest going and trying one in a store and not committing to ditching the desktop or maybe even a purchase until your 100% sure.

Some laptops have pci-e slots for gfx card upgrades but we're talking the 1k or so models here.

    Thanks for the input.

For the things I will be using it for is it worth getting a Centrino machine? Will I notice any difference?

Dell phoned me this morning to confirm my order and to say my credit card details werent going through (I placed my order online for the upgraded one)
She changed my credit card details and now the order has gone through. I have had email confirmation and the order date is today not yesterday...................will I still get my quidco cashback if she has changed the order number?????
Also I rand back and tried the cancellation thingy to get some discount, asked if they could waiver the freight charges................no joy there!!!!!

Just seen in todays Daily Mirror that this offer has been extended for another two days due to exceptional demand!!

Never had a laptop & I'm thinking of replacing my ancient desktop (still running Win 98, not SE, so no USB) with this Dell. Any advice re the following:

1 - Can I just plug my keyboard, mouse, screen in for more comfortable use, or would I need a docking station?
2 - I really need MS Office (word/excel) to work at home easily (i.e no importing/expoting and reformatting between applications). Is it best to upgrade at order or could I pick a copy of Office 2003 cheaply somewhere else?

    Any advice gratefully received :)

    Hi All

Has anyone that complained to Watchdog had any further contact with them??
Has anyone had a call or email back from Watchdog??

I managed to order my £299 laptop on Friday afternoon & since then i've had a Quotation Reference number (which I had to reply back to comfirm the quotation was as i requested), a order booking ref number (this was in the form of a order acknowlegement email) & this morning I've been advise of a order ref number. All the 3 numbers are different!!!
My order was placed with the Business section.

Fingers crossed i will be getting the delivery soon - i was advised yesterday that delivery will be on 1st March.

    Thanks to all, 3card

3card - the pages with the customer number and dell order number is all you need. the rest just seem to be steps on the way. with these 2 numbers you can check online your order.

Sorry I cant answer there Venna... need someone who has the laptop already.

Susi - if they changed the order I reckon your quidco might not track :( it does say orders not completely wholly online wont track. worth asking in the quico thread tho.

Slojo - I cant say if youd notice. I always notice any difference in speed, Im sure everyone does eventually and think maybe I shulda got that. Your best bet is probably to work out how much you can afford. centrino offers a little more speed but more important is it increases battery life.... Probably memory is more important for the jobs you want to do. as much as you can afford.
