I tried to order this on friday, i got the run around, and still no confirmation of the order being accepted. PS in theory I should get 7% off under the EPP, but they dont want to sell it to me.

I've never had a laptop before but at this price am considering taking the plunge. A couple of questions for anyone who might know.

    1. How easy is it to upgrade a laptop later e.g. the sound card, graphics card, memory and even the processor?

    2. I will be using it for internet, DVDs, WP, some old games (FIFA 2005) and for downloading/storing photos and films from my digital camera and camcorder i.e. your bog standard basic home user. Will this £299 Celeron be suitable or should I pay the extra for a Pentium Centrino machine. I am currently using a 4 year old Dell desktop which is 1.9 Ghz Pentium 4 + 19" CRT which is OK for my needs except does not have DVD RW or USB 2.0 ports. Will the £299 machine be an adequate replacement?

    Thanks in advance.

    EPP?? Whats that then
  • OK, the bad news is that MR X cannot do this anymore...I could explain but it's too long winded.

The good news is that he has told me in detail how to make sure you do get the £299 deal.

    1) Call through to HOME sales (must be home)
    2) As soon as the person answers (India or Ireland, doesn't matter) get the person's name in full.
    3) Say to the person, "Hi Vijay/Bob/Jane, just to let you know that I have tried to place an order with Dell a couple of times now and had the phone put down on me (say this whether you have or haven't). I have spoken to customer services and they have told me that this call is being logged. All I have to do is call them back and they will track this back to you via my telephone number (this is true by the way!). I only mention this Vijay/Bob/Jane, because I don't want you to get into a discplinary position with your employers (apparently it is a cardinal sin to hang up on a customer)
    4) Now, please can I order one of these laptops that you are advertising at £299.

I would be extremely interested to find out how everyone gets on with this.

Sorry Mr X can't take any orders. The cheapest he can sell it for is £399 plus VAT now. They really are losing a lot of money when they sell it to you for £299.

    Good luck

    Hi Slojo,

    1. Difficult. Laptops are pretty much full integrated.... you can add memory and occasionally you can upgerade the processor. Beyond that no.

    2. The games would be 50/50. older games would probably run, the lack of a dedicated gfx card is where you will have the problem. For the other purposes this machine would probably be fine. A direct desktop replacement it is not tho. Much smaller screen, lower power than that pentium at a guess, but with the addition of a dvd-rw.

Although to be fair that pc wouldnt be worth alot on the second hand market so why not keep both??

I can't belieive mine has just arrived. I ordered it on Saturday afternoon about 4.30pm through the business section but didn't get my email confirmation until yesterday. I sent back the pro forma invoice about 3pm and the computer arrived about 10 mins ago. Sorry to sound so pleased. I know alot of you have had alot of hassle to say the least.

How did it arrive? I ask because I have just had a card put through the door for a special delivery item that needs to be collected from the depot later today. I can't believe i missed the van, I've been in all morning and only went out briefly to add potato peelings to the compost heap!

I thought the laptops were coming by courier, but since i am not expecting anything else by SD I just wondered if this might be it?

  • Beware as the keypad is prone to wear out after a couple of weeks. The chassis is poor quality too. No wonder it's so cheap.

Odd that £399 plus VAT is the lowest he can do seeing as it's still £339 inc VAT on the website
