And the unlimted moves up to £15.99. All nicely hidden away in the fine print in the T & Cs. IMHO not such a good deal.
Actually, the unlimited goes up to £15.99 after 3 months, only if you live in a market 3 area, in other areas it rises up to £19.99.

Market 3 means an exchange where there are 4 or more principle operators.

Can you suggest an equivalent package with another ISP as I am on Option 1 at present with 2 months to run. I am a monthly customer and I agree about long term contracts because as soon as they have a enough people hooked they do a cull with support staff and you are left with a poor service and unable to change.

When your 2 months run out you should be on a monthly contract and should not then be liable for the activation charge or hardware costs. The cessation charges etc, I think only applies if you physically move to another house.

I have not as yet decided who to suggest as an alternative ISP, but for sure it will not be Tiscali/Pipex etc either.

As offers may change in the next few months, I would not now suggest what ISP to go with. Keep looking around nearer the time.

I do feel that Martin should look into his recommendation for Plusnet and also look into how bad 18 month contracts can be to your wallet if you have to cancel.
  • if you are in a market 3 area and just want basic web access and don't mind an 18 month contract, Plusnet value at £5.99 a month is hard to beat.

The support is good (at the moment) but Plusnet may have a problem if their 'Unlmited' offer attracts the mega users who see the word Unlimited and don't read the small print. A bit like what happened to them a few years ago. You think they might have learned.

You could get a cheaper 12 month deal with o2 via Quidco (currently £50 cashback).

If you have an o2 mobile, the cost of 12 months service would be around £38 (or around £3.20/month over 12 months). This is for unlimited use on up to 8mb service.

Do not forget what you are liable for if you cancel.

cessation fee £20, deferred activation charge £40, cost for "free" equipment, at least £30, then you have to pay the remaining months left times your monthly subscription .

You do net even get a pro-rata discount on the equipment or activation charge for the months you have been with them.

If you move and stay with them, you will be subject to a new 18 month contract and the cost off cessation and activation charge.

Contracts over 12months should be banned !

They have really introduced a poorer service and a price rise.(Well what do you expect,it is owned by BT!)

You do not get web space or able to have a free fixed IP address, unless you have their more expensive service.

The website is misleading, as not every one can get the starter off of 5.99,

The old Option 1 worked well 9.95, 12 month contract, webspace, fixed IP if required, and 2GB allowance ideal for low users. Option 2 was good as well.

I have put a number of the senior citizens on to Option 1, small business and home users on Option 2, but I will now NOT recommend Plusnet any more, and should any of them want to upgrade I will suggest an alternative ISP.

You've fairly well summed it up, I was ready to transfer to Plusnet until they made these changes, I was looking to take them up on their 1 month rolling contract as I don't want to commit to a lengthy contract having just got out of one with another ISP, I certainly have no intention of signing up for 18 months.

At present I am on the Option 1 at £9.99 and paid up until May when it si due for renewal. In effect if I change now, my credit covers me for just over 5 months. If you decide to leave after 12 months and break the contract you will need to pay £36 to get out to transfer to another provider. On reflection, IMHO this amount to break the contract is not the end of the world so maybe it is not such a bad deal after all.

Therein lies the rub. I am on vodafone!

    Checking the o2 website...
Standard broadband is £7.34 a month if o2/Be have LLU presence in your exchange (OK they probably have if you are market 3). Also, if you are only on o2 pay as you go (not monthly contract) you have to top up at least £10 every 3 months otherwise it's £12.23 a month.

Quidco cashback isn't guaranteed so it is not a good idea to rely on it. BTW You can also get £28 quidco cashback for Plusnet.
  • I have just changed my plusnet option to use value , this was driven by reponses from plusnet as below :-

    Questions :-

I currently subscribe to Plusnet Broadband your way option 2 @£14.65 per month and Home phone anytime £14.65 per month .
I am considering using plusnet value @ £5.99 per month as offers what I need .
    Questions :-
Can I downgrade my Broadband option 2 to plusnet value ?
Are there any costs involved in downgrading?
What will be the costs for plusnet value after the first 3 months my exchange is Bromsgrove?
What is the contract length for plusnet value ?
Will there be any difference in broadband speeds when using plusnet value ?
What is the download limit for plusnet value per month ?
Can I still have the home phone anytime with plusnet value?
Depending on answers received can I downgrade to plusnet value via member center?
    Thanks for your help

    Answers :-
    1) You are able to downgrade, yes.
    2) There are no costs involved in doing this.
    3) You are in a Market 3 area so the cost would only ever be £5.99 for the Value product.
    4) For existing customers moving to a new product, the contract is only 12 months long.
    5) You shouldn't see any difference in speed, but full traffic management information can be found here: http://community.plus.net/blog/2009/02/17/plusnet-unlimited-broadband/
    6) The download limit for Value is 10GB per month. You currently have 15GB on your package at the moment.
    7) You can have either of our phone products with Value.
    8) You can change over from the Member Centre, yes. You can also call us to make this change.

    Hope this helps someone

I now have line rental , anytime phone and internet for £20.64 a month which seems good to me .

    Regards Steve

Hi Steve, just copied one of your questions and the answer.
I have been trying to find out what price is paid after the 18 month contract ends, I have sent a question to Plusnet with no reply.
Do you take it that after the contract period it will remain £5.99 for EVER??
  • Yes, £5.99 after 18 months, if you're in a Market 3 area.
