I think I've found you. I hope you don't mind but I've just sent you a friend request, just reject it if you would rather not add me - I won't take offence :rotfl:. I've had a little look at it today, and managed to complete week one. Also a new one for me! I got quite behind with the last one and felt like I was always playing catch up so I'm going to real try and keep up this time
It's ok, I like adding people on the same course so we can help each other through the hard times of tma deadlines!Became Mrs Scotland 16.01.16Became homeowners 26.02.16

Thank you, I think it does help. It did freak me out a bit with the basic Maths we have to do, but I got there in the end. That might be something I need everyone's help with!Be Kind, Work Hard, Stay Humble, Smile Often, Keep Honest, Stay Loyal, Travel When Possible, Never Stop Learning, Be Thankful Always and Love0

I thought it was about time I swung by this thread and said hello
I have just signed up to the OU and commence study on 5th February next year and cannot wait
I am hoping to gain a degree within the ICT field but not fully decided on which degree to study towards yet, so I have made my first year quite generic with the modules I have chosen being relevant in nearly all of the ICT degrees.
I am studying 3 x 30 point modules in my first year which are:
T175 Networked Living
M150 Data, Computing and Information
MU123 Discovering Mathematics
My plan is to study 90 points per year so in theory will graduate in 4 years
I live in South West Wales and would love to hear from any of my fellow students, if you are starting or have studied the course I am doing then any insights would be very welcome, I am mostly concerned about the Maths Module, after much soul searching I have decided I should be capable of missing the initial Y162 which is only 10 points, I hope I have not made a wrong decision I suppose time will tell................................ On the plus side I am a self taught techie geek so am not expecting the 2 IT based modules to be all that challenging at level 1 leaving more time to concentrate on the old abacus
Anyhow nice to see there is a thread full of OU students and I am looking forward to being a part of it0 -
Hi OUStudent!
Have you played with the "maths choices" website and the "maths help" website, which are both linked from the MU123 course description? That should help you make the right choice. You can also see modules on OpenLearn from the course MU120, which was replaced my MU123. So whilst your work won't be the same it should be at a similar level, although the stuff on OpenLearn is only individual chapters and may not be complete or in the right order.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

Hello
Thanks for replying, yes I did do the 3 tests on the maths website lowest score was 90% that was what swayed my decision in the end
I was not aware of the open learn site I will check that out, seems like a great way to refresh my knowledge before the course starts in February
It is amazing how your own confidence has such an influence on the decision you make, I registered for the 2 IT modules without a second thought but have deliberated over the maths one for over a week! I bit the bullet this morning and registered for it as I did not want to send off my finance application until I had registered on all the courses I wanted to do.
I am very happy now I have decided and cannot wait to get started as said before this signals the start of a whole new life for me and my family it is very exciting
Thanks for taking the time to reply and that website link I appreciate it :beer:0 -

I want to do these three courses myself next year as part of an ICT BSc. I got the M150 books from some guy on eBay, and it is very introductory. I'm an IT engineer, so I don't see me having any problems with M150 or T175. I do need to get my maths sorted out between now and February, though. I tried to sign up for Y162, but they ran out of places well before the registration date.
I've got the sign-up paperwork for M150, T175 and MU123 in front of me now, but keep putting it off. The prophets of doom at work insist that it's a waste of time and money, and that I'd be better off doing more Cisco or Microsoft certs. I concede that doing the degree may not help me in my day-to-day work, but keep telling myself that it will make it easier to move to a managerial (or non-IT) role in the long-term.
Decisions, decisions ...0 -
It is amazingly difficult to decide, it has taken me all in all about 2 months to decide on these 3 courses and I still have not decided for definate which degree I want them to count towards!
I am trying to predict the future lol what is going to be the next big thing in IT about 4 years from now, as from past experiences and research the "big" players in the industry always seem to get there when the particular part of the industry they work in is in its infancy this seems to be where the money is.
I am leaning towards maybe something to do with robotics or virtual reality but need to do a lot more research legwork to figure out how an OU degree can then spring board me into this area.
I know what you mean though all of a sudden it seems like an incredibly important decision and the thought of getting it wrong is something I dont want to do, I have wasted too much of my life already this next chapter needs to be done correctly
If you think it is right for you then go for it, you have one up on me already as your CV will reflect your current IT experience so logic would say this experience sat along side a degree can only be a positive thing, when I was deciding I went onto the employment boards to ask existing IT professionals basically what are they would train now if they could to earn the best salary and the general consensus was to stay away from Microsoft stuff and look more towards Linux based courses, I can only go off what I have been told where as you are there working away already in the industry so must have a much better idea than me
Whatever you choose I hope it all works out for you and if you do go for the same 3 courses as I said to another poster it would be cool to get our own thread going for a bit of moral support if nothing else0 -
