I am thinknig that just with amazon alone the card will pay for itself. I really need to get a passport photo sorted out. I will put it on my list for this week.

Nice to know I don't need a student bank account. Does the OU provide any form of student ID?? I am a bit confused with everything to be honest

Hi they use to do an ID sort of card, but now its all in one with the nus card.
Another money saving idea, order the card online and you can upload a photo, they do the adjusting for you.

I dont know who ur internet provider is, if its AOL you can't use NUS application for a card as AOL objects...... I go through Internet Explorer.

Hi, Has anyone here studied U211 "Exploring the English language"? May I ask what you thought of it if so?

I last did "Understanding the humanities" and enjoyed it and have had a bit of a break so looking for something new now :)
  • I have just applied for my first OU course, and i am a bit confused by the financial support section. I am still registered as living at home with my folks, i stay at my OH's 5+ nights a week, but haven't officially moved in yet. My wages are low at the moment, but because my dad earns £40K+ a year will that go against me getting any sorta financial support/government grant? when i use the financial support calculator it asks about the household income, and not MY income. With just my income i qualify for help, but with my dads income + mine, i qualify for nothing. How does that work, and how is that fair? I don't get any money from my parents, and pay rent. Any advice anyone?

My course fees are £630 - its quite a bit of money for me.

I'm sure when i was applying it said something about if you still lived with your parents then their income would not be counted, but staying somewhere 5+ nights a week i would say that you had already moved.

    Thanks Gemmzie,

I'm going to think about it as I prefer hiding my condition and am not sure if I feel comfortable bringing it out into the open :rotfl:

Just got my last TMA back and got 98% - shame it's only worth 10% .

Hi I have an underactive thyroid too. I had to give up studying in 2004 as I was misdiagnosed with depression and CFS. I'm now thinking about going back but I know what you mean about hiding your condition, people tend not to understand and think that you should be ok cause your on thyroxine!

    Completed so far
    T172 working with our environment
DD121 Intro to social sciences part 1
DD122 Intro to social science part 2

I'm planning to ease myself back in very slowly so this year I'm thinking about taking

    Y178 Understanding Health

    early next year

    D171 Intro to councilling

    Oct next year

K101 Introduction to Health and Scocial care

If I'm successful with that lot then I'd like to do a certificate in mental health studies which comprises of K272 and K225. Then I may think about an Open Degree.

If anyone has any more information about how disclosing my illness could help would you let me know please.

For poeple in Scotland, did you know you can open a ILA account which gives you £200 towards study, (£500 if you do more than 40 points in a year)?

Nice to meet you all and read about your studies

How long does it take to hear about finance? I'm sick of the hassle I've got from them and now it's been over a month since they decided they do have all the details

ohh Gemmzie, can I pick your brains - what is the process for applying for assistance?
They say you cant apply until you tell them which courses you intend to do but from what I remember you can't apply for courses without paying for them?
So how on earth do you go about it?

I'm probably not the best person to ask because they bullied me into a corner with it and I'm still trying to get my funding
I paid up for my course being told I'd get the money back within a few weeks, this was January _pale_
