If you can, try not to take an extension as you may need to use it later in the course and/or you may find you put yourself under even more pressure to get a better mark as you have an extension (think you can only have one ?)

I've had two extensions (one on a course I didn't complete) and both times got really low marks so I am really determined not to have another one. Studying by yourself with family and work commitments is really, really hard but it really made me proud getting through the course. I'm meant to be studying now but OH is yet again going to be very late and the three children are all still up and wrecking the house so it will be a weekend catch up.

Have also found that I tried to reach the level I could when I was single, had no children and just worked. Have now realised that a great many things have changed and that I will not be able to attain that so I'm no going to beat myself up when I feel like I haven't done as well as I could.

I'm dreading the Easter holiday with the children being off! :rotfl:

  • Yay I just popped onto this board on the off-chance there may be something for OU students here, so glad there is!

Haven't had time to read the whole thread just now, only the first couple of pages and the last, but will try and catch up with it all. Can I join in? :hello:

I'm currently studying AA306...well sort of. Have not got off to a very good start, having needed an extension for the first TMA, and 2nd due tomorrow and not finished!!! Oh dear. I'm struggling a bit as it's my first level 3 course. (I'm aiming for a Literature degree.)

Looking forward to chatting to other OU people on here anyway!

    W100 people, what's your TMA02 been on?

TMA02 was on statutory interpretation, amongst other things. :)

I've just had my application accepted for W200, to start Feb 2010. :)

  • I've just finished studying with the OU last year. A300 and AT308 (Cities & Technology, best course ever). I used credit from my previous degree as well.

Next I'm hoping to do another distance learning course, an MSc from Aberystwyth. I don't think they'll hold my hand as much as the OU did! For starters they make you choose your own deadlines and apparently don't penalise you for not sticking to them. Think a lot of willpower will be needed.

20+ TMA's, 2 horrible exams (I went to a hypnotist for the last one in October) and I'm (happily! :p) coming towards the end of 4 years and 4 months of studying through the OU. :T

Can you please add me to the list of students

B120 no previous OU study hoping for a BSc in Business Studies some time in future.

I only decided to do this course a few days ago, it's been all hell let loose to get the financial assistance form sorted, it's done now and in the post today and will hopefully meet Tuesday's deadline! Nothing like making a last minute decision lol

I'm a bit scared, I'm currently studying an NVQ3 in Business and Administration and wondering how the difficulty compares..I guess I'll find out soon enough!

RVK, please don't worry - I'm doing AA100 which is intro to the arts, the course site says that I should be studying 12 hours a week, I haven't studied for the last 4 weeks and the course is so easy i can run through a chapter in a night, do my TMA, submit it, and still get 70%! I posted earlier on this thread, and perhaps it's the course that I'm doing, I'm quite frankly bored on my course, I did a short course last year and got totally tangled on it, went off and did hours of research, and then was criticised for not sticking to the OU material.

Of course it depends on what course you are doing - I'm doing a level 1 as a pre-cursor to entry to my full-time degree course, but I do get annoyed sometimes, and I (rather stupidly) joined the facebook page of the course that I'm doing, and night after night people are posting saying how difficult they are finding the course. I think if you relax, if you enjoy the subject that you are studying, then you will be fine. The OU positively discourage you from seeking information from elsewhere, whereas on the course I am doing I want to look for information outwith their books because quite frankly the information they provide is so vague!

Again, this is perhaps because I'm doing an arts course, my mother gained a BSc in Maths last year and she studied totally differently to how I do it, but she has to come up with precise results at the end of her TMAs, I have to just write something to prove that I have understood the text that I have read.

Good luck, I'm at the stage where I'm about to book my next course in my list of courses to do to get me onto my uni place (not through the OU) out of frustration!

I'm currently studying with the OU, aiming for the Ba(Hons) Modern Languages.

    I've completed:
    L192 Bon Depart (French) L1
    L120 Ouveture (French) L1
U211 Exploring the English Language L2

I also studied L140 Spanish but I dropped out because I changed streams from French and Spanish to French and English.

    I am currently studying:
    L211 Envol (French) L2
    A297 Reading Classical Latin L2

Next year I intend to study L310 French and A397 Latin (both L3) and following that whichever English L3 they dictate I have to do which will give me the 360 points to be awarded the Ba(Hons). My intention then is to do an MA in Linguistics and Education. I will probably use it to teach MFL or EFL, maybe abroad, but I might change my mind completely and do something else. I'm like that.

I find it all a struggle to maintain and keep my head above water constantly. tbh I don't know how on earth I have got this far and I'm averaging a high 2:1 to 1:1 class. I set out determined to get a 1:1 but now I feel like I will be happy to just get to the end.

Kelly - how did you find the Level 1 French courses? I would like to get back into the language and am thinking of taking one later this year, but it will run at the same time as my Level 2 law course.

How many hours of study a week did you realistically need to do?

L192 takes me about 5-7 hours of study per week.

However I do some of my learning of vocab and grammar on the train to work.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
