  • Everyone seems so organised i'm far from that i'm currently waiting for the Y177 understanding society course to begin. This is only a 15 point course but i've not been in the education system for over 20 years and thought it best to take things slowly. I've already registered for the DD131 social sciences course next may but that depends on how i do with Y177. I'd love to find someone whose doing the same course but alas it seems like no one is. I got the reading materials afew days ago and have only made sure everything was included, i might delve into the book this weekend.

I did Y177 this year and really enjoyed it. Unable to complete unfortunately due to unexpected personal stuff but nevertheless I learnt loads and it certainly makes you think around issues and read between the lines. There are tips on study techniques as well which is very helpful for a new or returning learner. A friend of mine did it 3 or 4 years ago (maybe more) - it was a 10pt course then and I believe it was 'upgraded' as at the time there was a lot of work for 10pts.

Now it is nicely balanced, you should find it a really good course to get you back into studying. The study planner helps keep you on track. My tutor support was fantastic, he guided me at every stage. I have a couple of extra books I bought from amazon which I can lend if you want? Happy to answer any questions - if I can

    Good luck and enjoy!!

Current OU study: DSE212 Exploring Psychology
Prev OU study: Y177 Understanding Society (not submitted), A181 Ethics in Real Life - also dabbled in a couple of short science courses
Prev other study: Certificate of Higher Education in Psychology - the first third of Psy degree (from year 1 at brick uni)
Future study: depends on whether I go for BSc Psychology or BA/BSc Criminology & Psychological Studies - I will need DD307 Social Psychology whichever way I go

Hi, I've just started my first OU course, DSE141 Discovering Psychology and starting SK124 Understanding the autism spectrum next week.

When the website opens there is a link to forums where you can find out who is studying the same course near you (at least I assume that applies for all courses). Also on Facebook I searched for my course code and found a couple of groups set up by (usually experienced) OU students so you can again find someone who is studying near you and generally get help and support from each other. These aren't moderated by the OU in any way though, so you might get some annoying people but you get them anywhere!

Good luck with your studies :)

Ok I haven't been on this site for many months but can now report that I have completed W300 (awaiting results) and am currently trying to sort funding for W301. Really looking forward to this final course as juggling several jobs and three children as well as studying is starting to take its toll!

I am a year behind you Floxxie. I have just completed W201 and due to start W300 in February (on the basis I have passed!). It is such hard going with work and kids, most of the people in my group have retired or don't work so it is nice to know I am not the only one! Good luck for your results and hope you are able to fund next year - it is so expensive isn't it! xx

Hey everyone.:) Have officially signed up to do my degree - English Literature, but with a focus on Creative Writing.

I have a question though. There isn't a course code for the creative writing route so I just put the English Literature code down on my application. Does this mean that I have to do the broad literature route? How would I go about changing it to the creative writing route?

This is all new to me.:o

Generally you don't yet. You just pick the specific modules, and then once you've pircked the right ones it will all get sorted. This might not be for years.

I did a the introduction to bookkeeping and accounts last year but I didn't really enjoy it. I'm thinking of doing a degree in either business with economics or politics, philosophy and ethics. The problem is I'm not quite sure which, but they do share some modules. I'm wondering if the modules can be done in any order?

Also, does anyone have any experience with transferring credits from a brick uni?

    Thanks
