before deciding on a subject to specialise in, you need to already hold decent grades in the base subjects of maths and english
if you dont hold at least a GCSE grade C (gained within last 3yrs) in both these (plus a science if you want to teach at primary level), then you are quite a way off starting an OU course
it costs about £300 to study and sit each GCSE exam (unless you are in receipt of certain benefits, then its more like £15+exam fee)
once you have your GCSEs, then the next step is usually free if you havent already studied at Level 3

I find this very misleading I'm afraid. I got three very poor CSE grades at school and a failed O level. I did 3 GCSE's on and off, even repeating one to try and get a higher grade. My grades were D,C,B. I then went quite some years before starting with the Open University. (Certainly a lot longer than three years). with an Openings course which eases you into it. My completed modules have all been passes and only a couple of marks away from a 'good pass.' The modules in my two current courses have all been passes ranging from 57 to 92%. If you go on the Openlearn website there are many materials and "tasters" there to give and idea of the standard of whether it is something you feel you can do. A lot of the materials have been adapted from OU courses.
Don't be put off JoKay. You don't have to have formal qualifications to do OU courses, although yes, a decent standard will be required so you are not slogging your guts out too much:rotfl: Do have a look at the Openlearn website and think about doing an Openings course.
Good luck and I hope you do "go for it."0 -
I think Flea72 was refering to going into teaching - which does require GCSEs in English, Maths and Science. No longer using this account for new posts from 20130

Ah thank you Gemmzie for clarifying. If this is the case than I do apologise flea72
Would a degree not override a lack of GCSE's though qualification wise? Seems a shame if it doesn't.0 -

yes, that is exactly what i meant lol, apology accepted
no, a degree wont override GCSES. but not being funny (ok i am), if someone hasnt been able to achieve at least a C grade in English and Maths, would you really want them teaching your kids?
just because you have a degree in waxing gorillas bums, doesnt mean you have the intellect/skills to teach children

Hi all!
Just signed up for MST121 - Using Maths. I'm hoping to go on to do a Diploma in Statistics. The last qualification I got in maths was a GCSE 14 years ago so going to get some A-level revision guides and see how much I can cover before it starts in October. Anyone else done this module from such a low base?
I'd been putting this off for a couple of months because it's a lot of money, but when I saw how the new tuition fees were affecting the OU, it made me get straight on the phone Monday morning, lol.
No email yet to confirm registration though - looks like I'll be back on the phone tomorrow.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY0 -
Hi,
Im new to this thread, but not to OU, been studying for a while and enjoy the Humanities courses.
I'm aiming for Humanities with Literature, but am struggling to decide on a course for Oct, made harder as I start a new job then, so I'll only have time once the kids are in bed!
I've been doing Lit based courses, but wonder if the amount of reading is too heavy for this Oct, and I'm best doing that next year. I've just gained my diploma in Literature, and I'm chuffed with that!
I need L2 or level3, with an EMA ( preferably) in humanities. I've looked at:
A215 Creative writing- I've never written my own literature before, so unsure about this one!
A300- 20th C Lit- heavy reading workload?
A218- History of science & medicine- I know this has an exam, but it looks very interesting!
E310- The art of English
DSE141- Psychology- This looks interesting, but would it change the degree to something else? It's a 30pt course, so I'm wondering whther to do this then a 60pt starting in Feb?
If you have any advice/suggestions I'd really appreciate it! Thank you xx
Completed:
EA300, A210, S154, Y156, Y162, A1030
