DSE141 is a Level 1 course. There's a section on your Student Home called "Qualifications" so if you've already picked the degree, you can do a plan to see which courses you need to choose from.

I don't think there's a Humanities and Literature degree though. In that subject the degrees are below:
    • English Language and Literature
You’ll learn about the English language and how it’s used around the world, and will study a wide range of literary texts. You can also include creative writing.
    • English Literature
Explore all aspects of English as an academic subject and acquire skills in critical analysis of different kinds of writing with this degree.
    • History
Explore a diversity of people, places and periods, including the impacts of empires on world history, twentieth-century dictators, history of medicine, and global heritage.
    • Humanities
This degree allows you to combine modules on different aspects of the arts – what people thought, made and practised – and their meaning and values in the past and today.
    • Philosophy and Psychological Studies
Explore concepts, theories, methods and debates in philosophy and psychology, relevant to a broad range of careers, including advertising and marketing, social services, administration and management.
    • Politics, Philosophy and Economics
An internationally recognised combination of subjects, providing you with skills and understanding particularly relevant to many areas of public service, including civil and diplomatic services and local government.
    • Open degree
The BA/BSc Open Degree is a qualification that gives you a huge choice in terms of subjects and modules that you study to make up your degree.

    Hope that helps

    Thank you,
There us a humanities with Lit, as you can do humanities with art, history etc.
I've got a plan already, I just fancy adding in a course that's jot in the plan, and also wondered if anyone here had completed the courses I listed above to help me decide.

before deciding on a subject to specialise in, you need to already hold decent grades in the base subjects of maths and english

if you dont hold at least a GCSE grade C (gained within last 3yrs) in both these (plus a science if you want to teach at primary level), then you are quite a way off starting an OU course

it costs about £300 to study and sit each GCSE exam (unless you are in receipt of certain benefits, then its more like £15+exam fee)

once you have your GCSEs, then the next step is usually free if you havent already studied at Level 3

I know you need GCSEs to go into teaching, but they don't have to be less than three years old, do they?

I know student teachers who took their GCSEs years ago and it hasn't stopped them getting on the course...

its not so much how long ago you did you GCSEs, but how long since you were in the study environment. most unis want people who can show they have attained some sort of qualification within the last 3yrs, as any longer than that and it will take you a while to get your brain back into learning mode

i very much doubt someone who attained GCSEs/A levels 10yrs ago, would dive straight into a Uni course without any prestudy, and i would be even more surprised that they got a Uni offer based on such out of date qualifications

    Xmas Saver!
For me study wise, flunked my GCSE's at 16, discovered nightclubs, ditto to the resits at 17 at college.
At 25, I went to my local college and did a HNC Business and Finance, (sucessfully passed), then at 36 started with Open Uni, I started with level 1 courses, but in the last 5 yrs, I've studied, various courses at level 1 and 2, and bar an odd upset have done well,

I would say if you haven't studied for a while consider an openings course, its a level 1 course, but a shorter version, and a good introduction x
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx

    Hi,
Im new to this thread, but not to OU, been studying for a while and enjoy the Humanities courses.
I'm aiming for Humanities with Literature, but am struggling to decide on a course for Oct, made harder as I start a new job then, so I'll only have time once the kids are in bed!

I've been doing Lit based courses, but wonder if the amount of reading is too heavy for this Oct, and I'm best doing that next year. I've just gained my diploma in Literature, and I'm chuffed with that!
I need L2 or level3, with an EMA ( preferably) in humanities. I've looked at:

A215 Creative writing- I've never written my own literature before, so unsure about this one!
    A300- 20th C Lit- heavy reading workload?
A218- History of science & medicine- I know this has an exam, but it looks very interesting!
    E310- The art of English
DSE141- Psychology- This looks interesting, but would it change the degree to something else? It's a 30pt course, so I'm wondering whther to do this then a 60pt starting in Feb?

If you have any advice/suggestions I'd really appreciate it! Thank you xx

    Completed:
    EA300, A210, S154, Y156, Y162, A103

I have done DSE141 and enjoyed it - the workload isn't too much but it provides a good intro to psychology. It is a level 1 course though and isn't humanities.

If you are wanting to get a humanities degree I think you need to complete AA100 - maybe you could do that in Oct?

The students I am talking about did an access course, so that would be the recent study. Unis would expect more than GCSEs anyway, as most applicants would have A levels too.

I was concerned the OP (or others) may be thinking they'd need to resit GCSEs from years ago, from the way youve worded your post, when that definitely isn't the case.

I'm interested to know how you're finding the law modules?

Also has anyone taken S154, SK183?

from the way i have worded my post, it is most definitely the case

if you dont have recent GCSE / level 2 maths and english, then you wont get a foot in the door to teacher training

on an access course you will study maths and english to at least level 2, if not GCSE, so this could be another reason why your friends outdated qualifications werent a hindrance
