  • Celticstar, I was ignorant of the benefits of steam generator ironing until I read this thread last week. I got a cheap steam generator iron in Cash generator last week and I have to say it is amazing!! I did the same amount of ironing in about 5 hours on Sunday, which would have taken me a couple of days with my normal iron. The stuff looks really professional too. The iron sits on a generator tank thingie which you fill with water, and because the iron isn't full of water itself, it is much lighter to hold. The only thing I would say is that I have a normal ironing board and I am told that if you have a special mesh board the ironing is even better because you don't need to iron both sides of the garment. I am going to Aldi tomorrow to get the ironing board they will have on special for £15.49 - the cheapest I have seen them elsewhere is £29.99 in Argos.

Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb (hey ho if the cap fits!) but what exactly is a generator iron and what does it do that is so different from a normal iron? They seem like huge contraptions to me. I'm all for making ironing easier but are they really worth all the space they take up.

    Thanks.

I have had a steam generator from Aldi for a couple of years now, and wouldn't be without it.
I have three young children and it just whizzes through my ironing and cuts my ironing time in half.

I understand what you are sayng about the size of them, but if you place it right at the end of your ironing board, there's no problem. Your so busy gliding throgh your ironing, you don't even notice it!!!!

Its brilliant for heavy materials, like denim Jeans etc, and glides through quit covers in no time!!

It is also great for refreshing clothes that have been hung up in the ardrobe for some time, and if you pour some of the scented ironing water in the generator it revitilises your suits etc,. just use the steam and jet it over your items whilst they are still on the hanger, and all the creases dissapear, and they smell great!

I would try one and see, I be you don't regret it!!
    Happy ironing
    Regards

    Sandy

It is not clear if the Aldi iron has continuous 80g steam or a peak of 80g.

You can get an extra boost of steam with these things, so is the standard steam more like 50g for this iron. If so, the Russell Hobbs with a continuous 90g for £55 seems better.

    Any ideas?
  • Argos sell one of these steam generators with a similar spec to the Aldi one, but it's £49.99 and it's made by 'Challenge.'

Just wondering if anyone has one of these and, if so, is it any good?

I have a steam generator iron, only started using it and its brillant!

Does anyone know is it necessary to keep putting the iron on top of the base of the iron, or do you just fill the base up with water and use the iron? Did that make sense?

I have used a steam generator iron for about 18 months now and will never go back to a 'normal' iron. Although its handy to have a 'normal' iron for if you just want to iron one thing at the last minute! :happyhear
  • Steam generator irons have been common in other European countries for several years, and there are many variations and models available. Mine includes a renewable filter, so never scales up. The base can be stood on the floor underneath the ironing board, and the iron itself left on the usual rest at the end of the board. However, the base has little rubber cones which support the iron when laid flat on its sole, and prevent it being scratched - very useful!
  • Hi

What is the guarantee period on it, and whats the output steam please?

Argos have this one, which is 90g continuous and if you take the extra 3yr cover-it still only costs £60-is that good?

OH wasn't impressed with the look of the Aldi one - I went for the Russell Hobbs one for £56 delivered plus nectar points from EDF. It has 90g steam constant and looks quite nice.

This may be the same as the one in Makro but I have no local Makro and don't have a card. Works out not much more getting it delivered.
