Don't worry Rusty I never recognise anyone on the phone - thank god for caller ID :rotfl:.

If you need bag lady help Jammy give me a shout - I've knitted loads of stuff ever sine my aunt taught me when I was about 8 - I can't be bad coz even DD will wear it - have never knitted any cushion covers - wonder what they would be like like furry :rotfl:.

OH is trying to get us out in the garden doing stuff but I can't be bothered :o all that bending down makes me dizzy. We are going to the tip with various broken electrical stuff from the garage which will make a bit of space. I really need to tackle the front garden........................................

Have a great day everyone it's really sunny here and DD is off out on her bike
Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended :p

Its SUNNY here in Lancashire - Hurray! It was grim yesterday until later on - we went to Southport for my birthday outing - was actually glad to get back home & spend some time catching up on here.....

My MIL has Alzheimers - it's a horrid illness - she has always been a lovely person but now she can turn on you for trying to help her and be very nasty - good job we've got 30 odd years of goodwill to use up! Jamtart is right MIL remembers stuff from wayback and repeats it endlessly - a visit there is like groundhog day - OH finds jobs to do whilst I [STRIKE]listen[/STRIKE] have a nice chat with her.

Rusty - my Mum had a cortisone jab for her sciatica which worked well - not nice to have but at least she then didn't have to crawl upstairs crying all the way. Ths was many years ago so perhaps things have changed since then.

Now don't be shocked but I am thinking thrifty thoughts!!

I have had my heating turned off for well over a week now and it won't be turned back on for several months!!
Last year I turned it off May 1st and was determined not to put it on until Nov 1st (there was a challenge on another thread about saving gas and electricity I think??!!) I only made it to Oct 29th or 30th as hubby was cold and fed up and put it on!!

Anyway the idea is to try and manage in the minor cold snaps by moving about, putting extra layers on, snuggling together on sofas, using hot water bottles etc etc all to save turning it back on therefore saving money!
obviously this is not for everyone and also might be inappropriate for those with young, old or unwell people in the household but wondered if anyone wanted to join me in turning off the heating and seeing how long we can manage without it????

Let me know what you think thrifty gifty gals xxx

Brilliant idea, I've turned ours off too a couple of weeks ago but OH is moaning a bit about being cold in the evening but I tell him to put a sweatshirt on  We also got a letter this week to say our energy charges are being reduced but I am going to keep paying the same amount and hopefully have some money to claim back later in the year.

Another tip is to make sure you descale your kettle regularly as it takes longer for a kettle to boil that has scale in it and only boil the water you need rather than fill the kettle for one cuppa. All saves money ;)

Magazines - That's one to keep a look out for at car boot sales...
Had a fab night watching Al murray last night - he is better live - swears more with it not being on tv but it's just so funny.
I am so tired today though so we are having a bit of lazy morning except I can't find my christmas money neutral note book which needs updating!!!

Remember to always empty the kettle when you have finished with the water (I usually put my boiling water into the washing up) because this causes the scale.

When you need a pan of boiling water, always boil water in the kettle and then bring to boil in the pan as it saves a lot of time and energy.

    That's it from me hahaah!!

Happy birthday for yesterday Marg.. you kept that quiet!!

Thank you for your good wishes rainmac & plm - Sorry, plm :o I'm very shy (& old enough not to be)it wasn't a special b'day!
Luckily, our water is quite soft so don't get much scale in the kettle.

Furrypig - I'm up for your challenge - don't think I'll get far with it as I'm ALWAYS cold but I will do my best (sounds like a cub scout). Am I allowed to put my gas fire on in the front room?

I was money saving by default yesterday - went to a large craft shop and had just picked up a magazine started to browse the rest of the shop when the woman said rudely 'we close at 5 o'clock' not 'Is there anything I can help you with because we etc........' I was mad but wanted the mag so bought it but I wont go back. They are in an exclusive location in the centre of the town & must have high rent to pay but if they are rude like that to everyone maybe not for much longer.... rant over.....sorry

Marg It is definitely fine to turn the heater on in one room! Must admit we did that last year all of us including the cat huddled together in the lounge with the gas fire on! Was quite good for us as forced us to be together so we did things as afamily which was great!

Belated Happy Birthday for yesterday too hope you had a fabby day xxx

I'm liking the hints & tips, keep them coming!!

Jammy, brill new challenge, I've got heaps of mags with x-files articles in them in the roof, & a huge collection of nipper & buster comics. Can always put them on ebay at a low price as if they dont sell I dont get charged.

Rainmac - get an email off to head office, she shouldnt have been so rude to you & caused you embarrassment. You may get points/voucher compensation, but even if you dont hopefully they'll speak to her about her attitude.

Rusty - I hope the Painkillers kick in.

Furry - I'll join you in your energy saving, have had the heating on very low for last couple of weeks & only noticed it yesterday, nothing a thicker top & a pair of slippers doesnt cure.
    Happy Belated Birthday Marg!
    Hugs to all :)
