What is the precise problem McAfee is warning about? Double-click the M icon in the bottom-right corner and it'll show you the status of the different components.
I've seen it warn about not having the latest version of one of the package's components and describe that as meaning you're "not protected" even though you may not actually be using that feature anyway.
The naysayers seem hasty to tell you to get rid of something before even finding out the exact nature of the problem...

I use avast and avira obviously on different machines and they are both pretty got for anti virus
  • It can also show if it's not done a full scan in 30 days.

I bought this Toshiba lappy I'm using on 31st Jan, it came pre-installed with McAfee Security Suite, first thing I done was load up AVG

Unistalled the McAfee thro Add/Remove progs last night, now I've just ran the above uninstaller file after coming across this thread, thanks guys :)

I may even consider removing AVG and trying one of the others mentioned

    Jen ~
The longer you leave this, the more likely you are to infect the computer.
My advice is use the uninstall tool NOW

    reboot and install Avira
Download AVIRA ANTI VIRUS PERSONAL (Top right)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/

then (Or even before if you wish), check the computer is clean ~

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
    UPDATE and FULL SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    Download SUPERANTISPYWARE (Top right)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
    UPDATE and SCAN

    Download HIJACK THIS (Top right)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
SCAN and post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else but scan and post the log)

Im glad you got rid of avg, i found it ok to use at first a few years ago but it would get slower and slower when doing a scan, nothing compared to avira or avast
