It's great that your sister is getting help. Just the fact they believe her is huge. I've had it since I was 8 but only got diagnosed at 19. I spent over 10 years in and out of the doctors' surgeries. They said, 'growing pains' they said, 'hormones', they said 'stress'.
Well at least they came close on the last one!
I moved here (UK) 3 years ago and my first GP was very dismissive and he even tried to make out that I was just lazy. Thankfully the second one listened to me and asked me a few questions which were spot-on. I didn't realise all the different symptoms could be part of the same thing!
Now I've been with this GP for nearly 3 years, she's amazing, I moved town only 2 months after getting her but still don't dare change GP's in case my next one is less sympathetic :(
It's a very hard condition to live with, especially when you're young (I'm 22). People just don't believe you're in so much pain, or they think because you're young you just CAN'T be. Most of my OH's family and even my own don't believe me at all!
We can only hope it becomes more well known (like ME) and then perhaps people will be more understanding....
Anyway, sorry for long post, it's just so amazing to find someone who knows what I'm talking about! :o

Hi Meli, just wanted to say i have fibromyalgia too. I got diagnosed 2 and a half years ago at a young looking 27 . I totally understand how people do not believe you. Still to this day theres friends i dont mention it to as i know they dont get it. They see me laughing smiling and enjoying myself and cant see how i could be in pain at th same time. I call myself a full time actress as im always trying to hide symptoms

Ive done some charity work for the fibro association in NI, and the more people who know i have it - they have also come out in the open about having it.

I could list at least 5 people with fibro/cfs etc , all young.

Today my hips are killing me and walking is difficult. I cycled to get a breadmaker and had to carry the bm back on my bike. As ive cycled with my legs at a different angle, im now sufering from it.

Have a hug, youre not alone.
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
