farley95 explained that the camps were set up for children from various disadvantaged groups. Being disadvantaged does not make a child 'feral'.
In life your children will have to mix with all sorts of different people, from all walks of life, from the rich to the poor, sick to the healthy, different religions, cultures. This camp gives them life skills, where they go and they have to deal with life on there own for a change without parents views or opinions on other children or what to say and do. ITS BRILLIANT FOR THEM.

This thread was supposed to be about sending your child on an affordable Summer Camp, but seems to have turned into an argument about benefits and the type of children who go there.

When my daughter attended last year she had a great time. There were children who were in care, she made friends with these children and they were nice. All children even those not in care have the capacity to be "naughty kids" and so whichever camp you send your child to they mix with people you would not like. In fact when I was a child I had two best friends both of whom my dad hated as he thgouth they were a "bad influence". You have to let your kids grow up and make their own sensible choices. I will say it can also help your child to realise how lucky they are in their life when they hear a little about other people's.

    Sorry for ranting!!

    I agree with this

Just wanted to say though that these holidays are not specifically for disadvantaged kids. I could not find anything to support this statement on the YHA website

  • I was just wondering who had used them before?

My son is 11 with slight learning difficulties.. would it be ok for him. He would love the activities, i know that.

Im a little worried about him being all alone by himself a long way from home.

    Any advice would be welcome

I can seem to find any other forums where its discussed

They have been going for many, many years doing different camps and have now grown in size and now have a website etc. They also do educational camps for schools/youth groups all year round not just summer Do it 4 real.
Well done YHA and the fab job they do all year round.
