It does seem rather confusing about recording on the - format as well. In the Q&A section it says:
A) This unit records both +R and -R.
However there is contradiction about this in an earlier question.
I needed + format personally but anyone else interested may with to double check with Maplin.
((( Note ))) :
Done some checking and it records onto + format only. It'll play - format of course. Discs are very cheap from excellent seller https://www.svp.co.ukKeep smiling!0 -
Started my own thread about this on the I wanna board but thought I might get more responses on here;
I want a DVD recorder and wanted to know which one would be best to get, ideally I wanted one with a hard drive - how much do I need? Also how much is it to get one with freeview? If I get one without can I still record freeview? Do they work like videos in that you can set them to record and they'll do it automatically? So many questions so little time!!!
I'm looking to spend around £150 maybe £200 max if it's really worth it. TIA.2p off is still 2p off!0 -

One option might be to get a PVR with freeview and a HD and USB so you can copy the files to a PC to edit burn to DVD. The Humax 9200 is good for this as is the Topfield the later is over your budget. Worth considering if you have a PC etc... and don't mind connecting things up.
Downside with route is that you will not get iLink/Firewire to capture DV from camcorder. Again depends what YOU want to do. You can get Firewire cards for PC cheaply now anyway. On the flip side the editing on the DVD recorder is poor, HD, the Philips one have the best editing IMHO.Seth.0 -
Thanks but the recorder will be upstairs and the PC is down, spotted this one on Maplin website, is it any good? http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48482&1&source=21&doy=16m2 If I get a returned one I get it for £169.99, is it worth it? Seems to do everything I think I'd want2p off is still 2p off!0

Just wanted to let readers know that I've had the Yamada DVD HDD Recorder for a week or so now and am very impressed indeed. What a bargain!
The quality is excellent. I've found the EP setting (supposedly a lower quality to the SP and HQ levels it has) to be really good. So, it stores 60 hours of TV at that setting. I can't imagine why anyone would need any more and guess people paying extra for 160GB recorders never use all that space. (There is a 160GB model available though)
Editing on the machine is so much better than 3 other DVD Recorders I've had. It's easy and fast. It plays discs that those machines rejected too. I'm archiving video tapes onto DVD and it's a cinch with this machine.
Burning from the HDD to a disc is very fast and vice versa. An episode of The Simpsons is done in about 5mins. It can time-slip and be made multi-region in 3 seconds flat.
A firewire connection at the front has made linking up my camcorder a doddle.
Yamada have an inbuilt guide to make learning how to use the machine easier via a single button on the remote - although menus are intuitive anyway.
The casing looks more stylish in 'the flesh' than on the photos and feels well made.
It sounds like I should be on commission but I'm just so impressed. My £260 Philips recorder it replaced was total rubbish by comparison and that didn't even have a Hard Drive!
If you've never had a DVD recorder then snap this up. You won't regret it. It's worth more than double the money in my view.
I highly recommend this Yamada DVR-9000H.
At £116 it's an astonishing fantastic deal.
. . . . . . . . . . . <note> : this price is explained in post number # 34

Why come on a Panasonic Bargain thread & try to get people to buy unreliable cheap Chinese rubbish. It is an unknown cheap brand against one of the most reliable & respected names in electronics.Nice to save.0

Ref the Yamada...looking at the comments it can't playback a recording whilst recording another program. Is this true? I have found this a useful feature0
-
No it doesn't do that.
I have one of those Amazon £19 players should I wish to play a disc whilst recording. You can buy DVD players for the price of some DVD discs now. (amazing isn't it). So, if bargain hunting is your main focus it's no big deal.
Of course the Yamada is not the highest spec Recorder on the market but for the money it's the best I've found by far.Keep smiling!0 -

As for branding. I have no faith in 'brands'. I've had trouble with Sony, Philips and Toshiba.
It has 12 months warranty and is from a respected High Street specialist retailer.
Granted the thread has become somewhat muddled (as most threads do) from Panasonic. It's just that people searching for DVD Recorder deals seemed to be looking here. I'll post this elsewhere to try and keep you happy.

Wilf.
I can understand people offering advice on an alternative recorder, I find it usefull when I'm looking at the bargains, however a cheap Chinese recorder is not helpfull as many of the features of the Panasonic are not on it. As for reliability, all the better brands have some problems some of the time, it's just most cheap brands have a lot of problems a lot of the time.Nice to save.0
