£116 for 80GB HDD DVD RECORDER

((( "Big-up" to MSE member Redzak! Many many thanks for his original post. )))

I've scooped a great bargain of just the kind of HDD and Record-to-disc DVD Recorder I was after. (no Freeview but I wasn't worried about that).

An 80GB HDD (hard disc drive = built in memory) - From a respected specialist retailer with 12 months warranty.

The RRP on these machines is £260. Maplin are well priced anyway at £200 but they are on sale for £149.97. They had 2 graded machines with full warranty at just £129.99.
By using Redzak's voucher suggestion and Quidco savings I've just bought a £260 unit for only £116.84 with free p+p.

The voucher (£7) is by signing up for Maplin's newsletter and cashback (5%) via https://www.quidco.com

Yamada DVR-9000H link:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=46217&doy=22m2

It gets good customer and magazine reviews.

Even if there are no graded ones left at £149.97 plus £7 and 5% off + freepost. It's a deal.
Hope this is helpful to someone.

Cheers Wilf.

(I've started the post above as a new thread at the request of another member)

    UPDATE:

Just wanted to let readers know that I've had the Yamada DVD HDD Recorder for a week or so now and am very impressed indeed. What a bargain!

The quality is excellent. I've found the EP setting (supposedly a lower quality to the SP and HQ levels it has) to be really good. So, it stores 60 hours of TV at that setting. I can't imagine why anyone would need any more and guess people paying extra for 160GB recorders never use all that space. (There is a 160GB model available though)

Editing on the machine is so much better than 3 other DVD Recorders I've had. It's easy and fast. It plays discs that those machines rejected too. I'm archiving video tapes onto DVD and it's a cinch with this machine.
Burning from the HDD to a disc is very fast and vice versa. An episode of The Simpsons is done in about 5mins. It can time-slip and be made multi-region in 3 seconds flat.
A firewire connection at the front has made linking up my camcorder a doddle.
Yamada have an inbuilt guide to make learning how to use the machine easier via a single button on the remote - although menus are intuitive anyway.
The casing looks more stylish in 'the flesh' than on the photos and feels well made.

It sounds like I should be on commission but I'm just so impressed. My £260 Philips recorder it replaced was total rubbish by comparison and that didn't even have a Hard Drive!
If you've never had a DVD recorder then snap this up. You won't regret it. It's worth more than double the money in my view.

    Cheers, Wilf.

I don't have one myself but my guess is: yes it will.
You could make sure by clicking on the Live Help button on the Maplin website.

I've just taken a look and under the product description is a list of Q&As including this:

    Q) Can i record from sky/cable onto the hard drive? - Paul
    A) Yes, it will record from any source via scart

You might be surprised how soon a 160 gig hdd fills up! unless you select low quality recording I suppose, but what's the point...
No reliance should be placed on the above.
  • I'd have thought only if you're archiving stuff in which case I'd save to a 17p disc.
Personally, I find the picture quality of day-to-day recordings setting on EP (on this machine) is just the same as if I'd used my video recorder. Obviously if you really want highest quality then the capacity reduces.

You can get 10p DVD-R blanks from SVP here, packs of 100 blank DVDs for £10 inc VAT but excluding P&P (Wait for their 99p shipping offers for order over £30) just sign up to their mailing list. My previous post on backups and cheap media here.
    Seth.
  • Please note folks that:
This machine will only record onto the + format discs not the - ones.
It will play the - type ones of course.

    hi all.
last week I received a B grade 250gb Yamada from Maplin, was £199, added a 50p packet of stickers to qualify for £15 voucher, and of course the quidco cashback dropped the price to £176.
Great features at first sight, then a major problem: the tuner audio cut out, all viewing and recording in surround silence.
Maplins customer care is excellent, and waiting on full refund.
Would buy this make again, similar to Cyberhome, but I just feel the quality of this machine was suspect, having had a previous fault.

Maplin's prices are usually way too high, but on who-are-they brands, good deals can be had.
