I went into Richer Sounds last saturday to buy this - was £159.95 for Region 2 version at the time.

They did not have any Region 2 in stock other than a scratched up on one display and would only sell me the region free version for £169.95. They said they would not be getting any more stock in.

Annoyed, I went to Currys to see what they charged - £199.99.
I was about to leave when I noticed that they do a price promise and the young lad serving me said they would match the price and knock off 10% of the difference, even though Richer sounds only had a demo in stock !

I got it for £155.95 in the end.

I already had a Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD recorder and have to say that the E20 every bit as good if not better.
The ability to bring up the Programme Gude, click on the program and record is great. Plus progressive output on an LCD is a worthwhile bonus.

If you can't get a Richer Sounds with stock, give Currys a go

It maybe that DVD recorder owners are less fussy - but there are not many unhappy ES20 owners around it seems. I will no doubt venture back into the PVR market when they become more reliable... though it probably won't be too long before PVR's combine with DVD recorders anyway at a sensible price.

Dont think so, as Fusion and others had plans for a dvd recorder/ hd combi to be launched early 2005, they still haven't appeared and they ( fusion) are re badging 150s at Argos, possibly with returns innard, for £124. Software still seems to be the problem, so everything else is on hold in the pvr scane.

Glad to see you are sorted at last, I'm tempted, otherwise it is a £200+ Humax or Topfield. The Aldi thing is still rumbling on as so far the no sound on Winter hill is still a problem so update 1.2 may be delayed.

Saw some DVD recorders in Aldi last week, big pile of them, Tevion make, and very keenly priced, I thought. About £80/£90 I think. The spec on the box was enough to impress me, someone who knows very little about the subject. Nearly came away with one, and still considering it, but are they really any good?
I would like something that I could use to record family videos, etc. as well. One more question, does anyone know if it's possible to record from an analogue Hi-8 camcorder on to any of these machines?

Yes you can record from analogue Hi8 with these machines. They have the composite video input.

We have a Panasonic ES10 downstairs and it's a very good machine. I've recorded from A sony video8 camcorder onto DVD with it.

For the difference in price between the Tevion and an ES10 at Tesco - I'd go for the ES10 or the ES20D.

Hey thanks again gizmoleeds. Just phoned Colchester RS who say they have plenty of the multi region for £150 but none of the region 2- said he was sure he could do a deal with me...so I will be in there tomorrow. :j
When we got freeview we had to get an aerial booster fitted- should I get some kind of splitter do you think?
So glad our v old dvd player died this week :o - great timing.
  • Got the multi region for £149 rather than £159, as he didn't have any region 2s which I had asked for when I called( although to be honest I was happy with that!)
Also ,if you print off a map to the store you get a token for a free pair of headphones when you spend over £20- nothing special just little blue in ear ones, but worth having.
It is really easy to set up and use, though obviously to really get the most out of it will take a while. Managed to record casualty and watch the start while taping the end. Great.
P.S. A woman I met instore said this had a great review on WHICH

DVD Recorder with HDD for £200 - ANY IDEAS ?

Just wondered if anyone had a recommendation for a DVD Recorder with a Hard Drive built in as well as ability to write onto discs?

Anyone have a best buy suggestion?

    Cheers, Wilf.

  • It might be worth waiting a few weeks to buy cos there are new Panasonic models coming out next month and the price is bound to drop on the old ones.

    That's worth knowing, thanks.
