Because this was a 'timed test' I did the maths quickly in my head (never a good idea for me). That's where I made the most mistakes, although I didn't do too badly over all. Was the time really factored in, or was it mentioned to stop people using their calculators?

    !!!!!! is all that about?
  • This is a sour grapes post because I only got 10/25, but I've got to take issue with the petrol one. Although only half-filling your tank will save you 22.5kg if you have a 30 litre tank, on a 1350kg car (such as a Ford Fiesta) this will only improve your power/weight ratio by 1.7%, a factor which can easily be affected by conditions. On the other hand, when hypermiling you try to conserve momentum as much as possible - braking for a petrol station and having to accelerate away again twice as often will eat into that 1.7% improvement in efficiency. Not to mention the fact that, if you're in a petrol station twice as often, you're going to buy twice as many Biscuit and Raisin Yorkies.

    Well I am anyway.

Don't worry I only got 14/25 and I am perfectly happy with that result. The test was hard (imo) which makes it a lot more useful than 25 obvious questions. 88% got less than 14 right btw when I took it.

Regarding petrol, it will of course vary from person to person but I think the majority of drivers will save money by not simply filling the tank each time they fill up. In my own case I fill up along with the weekly shop, so I fill up based on how much I expect to need before I return (~70% of a tank normally).

It may be heresy to say this on the MSE board but truth be told I doubt the savings amount to enough to be worth planning your schedule around, so you are right planning in more petrol stops is imo probably a waste of time, but if you have an idea when you will next want to fill up and can manage your fuel level why not save a few pennies.
