    Hi vicki,

I use the foil and soda crystals and it works every time. There's an earlier thread with lots of other ideas so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

OK seems it has already been covered...in depth! Thanks for adding to the thread x

I never find things using the search, is it me doing it wrong or is the search function a bit naff?

I have some soda crystals for laundry so will give the foil tip a go as that seems popular. x

    Hi vicki,

The search function can be a bit tempermental but the best thing to do is search individual forums rather than the whole site. Also it's better to use key words that may be in the title rather than search entire posts or it will literally bring up hundreds of threads.

If you go to the top right of the main old style board there is an option to 'search this forum'. When you click on that it gives you an option to go advanced, click on that then search titles only for 'jewellery' and it will bring up all threads with jewellery in the title.

If you have a look at sra's A-Z guide on searching that will explain better than I can. :)

It's Swarovski, so I'd rather be safe than sorry but cola can't do too much harm can it - especially as its drinkable! :rotfl:

Sorry if there is already info about this, done a search but not come up with anything.

Has anyone got any suggestions for shining up silver and silver plated items, that doesn't involve buying proprietary branded products? I only have one bowl that was 50p in a charity shop, but it is looking very tarnished and needs a good clean.

    Hi Bogoff babe,

To remove tarnish from silver place some scrunched up tin foil in a dish. Then add some soda crystals and pour on hot water. Immerse the bowl so that it comes into contact with the tin foil. Leave it for a few minutes, then rinse, dry and polish. I do this regularly with silver cutlery and jewellery and I don't know why it works but it does.

For polishing I have seen recommendations on Old Style of a baking powder/lemon mix and also toothpaste recommended. I'll see if I can find the thread for you.

I can vouch for cleaning the silver plate with toothpaste as I`ve done it this week! On " How clean is your house",this was recommended but NOT on silver. I have two old silver plate trays which were really yucky and came up really well - I was very pleased.:j
