I'm making progress; I received my tiny £5.50 USB modem from ebay via Hong Kong, and got it installed. Successfully dialled 1471 with the excel tool, so all is ready to go. Next step is to edit the V4 Programming Tool.

I have my line rental from TalkTalk (but I'm probably going to switch to O2), and I'm signed up with 18185, 1899 and 18866.

My question is; although 18185 is great for nearly all the international calls I want to make, the one exception is German fixed lines, where 1899 is cheapest. Prefixes for these would be 00 49 2 to 00 49 9 - is there a way of creating a rule like this?

I would like to change the weekend definition in my V4+ to run from 7pm Friday evening to 7am Monday morning, and I notice that is possible in the Orchid Programming Guide using ***[dowhhmmdowhhmm]*6 which would result in ***[5190010700]*6, but Kevin's excellent spreadsheet has no provision for setting the days of the week in the weekend definition. Whilst I can input the necessary sequence directly, how would one alter the Excel spreadsheet to make provision for such 'day' adjustments?

There is provision - but it's not on the 'Main' sheet of the workbook, it's on the 'config' sheet. Click on the 'config' tab at the bottom of the window, and you will see that 'Weekend start day' and Weekend end day' can be defined in cells C4 and C6 respectively.

    Hope this helps you.

Thanx for that - I must be using an older version of the spreadsheet, so I have unprotected it and changed the entry by hand :)

So, carrying on my conversation with myself, I successfully tested a single string update, using an earlier suggestion of blocking my own mobile. All worked perfectly, so I updated everything using my version of the spreadsheet.

I used 0049*2*9 as an attempt to direct all German landline calls via 1899, copying the format from the "local calls" call type description.

I plan to work through my table testing that everything has worked.

I was a bit concerned about the crackly sound of my line and the variability of the modem noises while sending all the data, but the system seems to be quite robust and so far I reckon it probably all worked.

Is there a PayPal account for sending a virtual pint of beer to Kevin as a thank you for this brilliant piece of work?

You're certainly not talking to yourself - others are reading and taking in your logical approach.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I've just returned home after a couple of weeks away and ran the Lawry program with a slight modification to change the 0600 and 1600 start and end times to 07 and 19 since I've now switched back to BT as my CPS rather than Primus (I had been suffering from some very poor quality connections with Primus).

It's now Sunday and when I call a number like 01626****** or a 01772***** number I get the "zero pence per minute" message when I assume that I should be getting no message since the call should be going directly to BT for a no-charge call. Calling an 0845 number gave no message and I'm hoping that means that the 0845 call did go through BT for a zero charge.

Am I doing, or have I done, something wrong to have this problem ?

    Thanks for any help.

    The clock needs setting.

That can be done using the modem but it's normally quicker to do it manually:

    Thank you very much Heinz.

I did the manual clock re-setting as you suggested and I no longer get the "zero pence per minute" message.

I am, however, somewhat confused as to why the Lawry program did not set this time correctly ( as I'm sure it has done for many months now). Is there a likely setting in the Excel program that I've forgotten to modify.

I am not sure you had been setting the time before because that would mean you had separately clicked on the 'Set Time' button too.

It's easy to click on the 'Dial Carrier Code Table' and 'Dial Routing Tables' buttons but forget the 'Set Time' button (I manually update my V4's clock each week using my DECT handset).
