    Hahahahahaha I can't believe it...

Ryanair is inviting passengers to suggest the next 'discretionary charge'! Some of the suggestions already received are remarkably familiar - perhaps he does read these boards after all...

I don't know whether to laugh or cry, reading that.

Don't think that would raise much then. Do you?

20% of all bookings with Ryanair are made with an Electron card.

OK, it maybe the minority, but thats simply because an Electron card is pretty useless when compared to a full blown debit card so people don't want them.

It WAS an obscure card (compared to most of the other suppliers) until people cottoned onto the fact that you could get away without paying the debit/credit card cards by using it.

But I didn't say I did...I was quite clear that I was being charged £19.50. I wouldn't go to the trouble of getting an obscure card to save £9.50, hence Ryanair gets their way. £19.50's a reasonable price so I clicked to go ahead. What I object to is the dishonesty...yes, the price is presented, but the headline given is misleading. Put it another way - how happy would you be if you got to the checkout at Tesco to be told that all transactions other than using a very obscure card will be subject to a 100% surcharge?

I didn't say you did either - that comment was directed at the OP who obviously did just that.

Ryanair get their way because you CHOSE to pay in the way you did.

It's not dishonesty (look it up in the dictionary).

The headline is not misleading - it's EXACTLY the price that someone paying with Electron, not checking in hold luggage and doing online check-in would pay.

If I got to the checkout at Tesco (or any other shop) and was told that I'd be charged for paying by an obscure card, I'd leave the trolley full of food in situ for them to return to the shelves.
    As would most people.
The shop would soon get the message.

But you're not comparing apples & apples here.
YOU were aware of the Ryanair charges and chose to accept them.
If any shop made that policy clear before I walked in the door, I wouldn't walk in the door - unless of course that ALL shops were applying that same policy.
You have the choice of booking your flights with other companies who charge what you deem 'more appropriate' fees for paying by almost all debit/credit cards.
    So why didn't you?

I'm still grinning at the bargain I appear to have got...

I booked on 2nd March return Newcastle-Dublin for 17th March coming back next day (St Patricks Day) for a grand total of....£13.50 (using a Electron, paid for airport check in as no passport)

And now...the exact flights 10 days later are...£360!

Can't help but think I've got a good deal there!!

I wouldn't say it's ever been obscure, though it's true that in Britain its use has until recently been confined to those considered 'too chavvy' (or too young) to have a proper bank account, and as a result it's been considered obscure. Interestingly though, in some countries it's by far the most common debit card, and in many of the 'new' economies (e.g. Russia) it's the only one banks give out. There's no problem with acceptance because all transactions (debit and credit) in these countries are authorised electronically, and there's no notion of 'inferiority' because it's what everyone has.

Make that £4, after you've been refunded the £9.50 airport check-in fee, since you are "unable to avail of Online Check-in by reason only of not being the holder of either a valid passport or a National Identity Card, issued by the government of an EU/EEA country".

I would like to share my experiences of Ryanair.

I had never flown with them before and was firmly in the stereotypical anti camp even though I had never used them.

The bookings were made by my employer and were PIK-STN-CIA and the same in reverse. We were booked with 1 hold bag each and with a little preparation and a quick check on the airport scales managed to get 14.9Kg and 14.8Kg cases. 3 flights landed early and the last was 2 minutes late but on time announcement still played.

I can honestly say they were fine, you got offered everything under the sun to buy but not overly intrusive and the food I bought on the STN-CIA going out was good even if a little pricey.

Would I use them again? Yes. Do I wish the hand and checked luggage allowances were bigger? Yes. Will I compare them to Easyjet as viable alternative? Definitely yes. Have I now got a HBOS electron card? Yes.

Just need to get some good cabin baggage. Any suggestions?
    I have a cunning plan!
Proud to be dealing with my debts.
