ryanair keeping banging on about making flights cheaper by charging fo the loo etc. I dont think the fligths need to be cheaper. i distrust this airline and they have gone too far. It will be 50p for the onboard air and a tenner to use the emergency slide.

The boss wound a few journalists up with a joke about charging for the loo. More fool the journos that kept it going and the members of the public that fell for it as well.

Ryanair have carried around 58 million passengers in the last year and a great majority of these will be satisfied customers. I have had my differences with them but overall I would much rather they be available for me to chose or not than for them not to be there at all.
  • Can anyone tell me if it's legal for Ryanair to charge me 3 'debit card handling fee' s for making one card transaction to book 3 passengers on the same flight. they charged me 3 lots of £9.50 to book us on the same flight!!

I thought I was paying a total of £103 but ater the deed was done it was £131, then I got the clear breakdown of the cost, including card handling fee per passenger, so I've been charged £28.50 card handling fees to pay my bill of £103, that's got to be excessive!! I'm pretty internet savy, maybe I missed the t&c's somewhere but it definetley wasn't clear to me what my card was getting debited till it was done, is the detail buried away in some obscure part of the website?

Ta & feeling ripped off!

Did they charge you a £5 per sector per person check in charge?

Have a read through the Ryanair thread here beside where you put in type of card is a link to charges per person and your total amount payable would includ fees which would have been different to teh flight charges further up the last page

I am going with Ryanair next week and did not pay any charges as I used an Electron card and this is the only one you do not get charged for.
    TOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T

No, because it says it excludes offers, so technically you could get your total journey for £2

Yes it's legal, and it's made perfectly clear during the booking process (and on the fees page) that the debit card fee is per person per sector. If nothing else you would have been shown the 'total amount to be charged' right above the 'pay now' button, which would have included all fees and charges. I'm afraid the only way to avoid it is to use an electron card!

We won't know that until they start advertising the flights. It doesn't have to be part of the ticket price, only that the advertised price must include all taxes and charges.

I can see them using it as a promotional gimmick, offering free check in from time to time so it looks like a £5 saving.

Indeed the website does already say that "promotional fares" will be exempt from this charge. That's what's so worrying about it, the fact that for 'ordinary fares' it seems it won't be optional. It remains to be seen what happens in practice but I rather worry that they'll get away with it because the 'headline fares' won't break any rules.

It does feel excessive and it is staggered depending on which type of card you use. I'm not sure if it's Ryanair, but one of the budget airlines has the lowest charges for Visa Electron card holders. Now, I remember the days when many businesses wouldn't accept Visa Electron, but it's definately paying off now.
As for the legality of it all, it is a fact that many businesses get charged an admin fee by their bank for transactions on certain card types. Just as an example, several city centre shops close to where I work charge for using Switch no matter how high the transaction is.

All I can realistically suggest is that you investigate this further when you come to make final payment for a budget airline flight and use whichever card has the lowest charges if you have it.
  • no, didn't get that (or at least if I've been charged it's not on the bill or beforehand!) my flights were just Glasgow - London, so no other sectors, just got charged for the flight and taxes price (return flight was tax free) I did all the usual no bags, no insurance stuff etc which really !!!!es me off because I think people who aren't used to using the site or booking flights etc could easily be charged for things they dont want because of the way the website works! I've always thought I'm savy on the net but still ended up with charges i didn't expect. I used a solo card (which is a bit like electron) so don't know if they have different policy for this, couldn't find anything in thier t&c's despiite searching about thier card charges so think it must be buried away somewhere if it's there at all.
