    According to this page :

    http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/news.php?yr=09&month=mar&story=gen-en-100309

Ryanair will start charging for webcheck @ £5 per person from the 1st May 2009 even when you're not checking in any baggage..

Now - I know they can get away with the ludicrous credit card charge because they let you off if you use an "Electron" card, but how are they going to get away with adding an extra charge which you *can't* avoid ??

What's to get away with? If that's the charging structure they want to operate then your choice is pay it or fly with someone else.

It does seem that they want to have their cake and eat it, though.

Take care how you pay as it seemed to me I was going to be hit with cc charges even though they had been incurred on the original booking which I was surprised at.

While not defending the level of charge, Ryanair will incur an additional transaction fee if you need to make an additional payment, so it's logical that they'll charge you another fee.

The point is - if its not optional - it should be on the ticket price.
AFAICR - they've been pulled up for this sort of thing before..

If a ticket is £50 and they say its £50 - thats fine.
If they say the ticket is £5 - but when you go to pay for it - its and extra £45 for stuff you *cannot* reasonably avoid - then IMHO thats misleading and they shouldn't get away with it.

Yes, I agree, I was more interested as to whether this was a new charge as I've definitely added bags both pre- and mid-trip before and don't recall extra charges being added.

We won't know that until they start advertising the flights. It doesn't have to be part of the ticket price, only that the advertised price must include all taxes and charges.

I can see them using it as a promotional gimmick, offering free check in from time to time so it looks like a £5 saving.

So it was possible all along to do this. When I queried this with them last year I was told that it was a U.K. government regulation and would have to pay to check in at the airport, but I could apply to have the charge refunded. Oh yeah, where have I heard that one before

I'm not sure I understand your post.

Non-EEA nationals were previously (and currently) unable to check-in online. They have to pay for airport check-in and apply for a refund later. That's not a UK government regulation, it's just Ryanair's policy.

However, due to a change in Ryanair's policy, from Thursday of next week non-EEA nationals will, for the first time, be able to check-in online.

It has never been a government rule, and the staff were wrong to tell you so (though I'm not surprised no one told them what was going on!). It was company policy, designed to make the rules as simple and as hassle-free as possible: on the vast majority of Ryanair routes EU/EEA citizens have guaranteed freedom of movement so there's next to no chance of there being a problem with documents, and therefore no risk of delay to the plane leaving the checking of them until the gate. Until now the risk and extra hassle associated with other nationals has been considered too great to bother with. It will therefore be rather interesting to see how Ryanair staff cope with it now - for a start the Home Office immigration manual will have to be kept at all boarding gates for some last-minute checking of visa requirements...

It's not lawful for them to do this - so if the check-in fee is compulsory, they'll have to show it in their headline price

ryanair keeping banging on about making flights cheaper by charging fo the loo etc. I dont think the fligths need to be cheaper. i distrust this airline and they have gone too far. It will be 50p for the onboard air and a tenner to use the emergency slide.
