...new kernel Marty, similar as all of its NT predecessors.
Please don't confuse the MAC user with technical words. In MAC speak Marty 'it has a new pooter brain for thinkin and that' but 'it is from Billy Gates so it is stinky'. It is not encased in one piece of shiny aluminium and is not designed to organise your photos of your trekking holiday in Burma. This thread should be locked for computer users only.
I do however believe the MAC has great feng shui and is about fun and PC's are about offices and work and viruses and freezing up and rebooting. When the bloody hell is nelly coming back?0 -

I'm sorry to be so confused by your technical prowess, but when you say "MAC" are you talking about Machine Access Control, or Migration Authorisation Codes?
Or do you mean to say "Mac"?

I have some questions about Windows 7 beta. I've downloaded it and really want to give in a test drive. My initial concern is where and how to install it.
I'm still running XP MCe as my main and will absolutely not budge from it, it's solid as far as my requirements are concerned. I have Vista MCE edition as a secondary boot which I rarely use, other than to test applications and various setups now and then. This is my first considerment, if I wanted to replace my Vista installation, how viable is it? My main concerns here are,
1) Can the Windows 7 beta be installed as an upgrade to vista or does it have to be clean install?
2) If I installed over or clean install in place of vista (secondary boot to XP) how would it affect the boot loader. I ran into several problems dual booting XP and Vista because of the order I went. I have no intention of removing XP so is it still possible to install windows 7 beta over Vista and have it dual boot with XP still.
Does 7 use the same fiddly boot loader as Vista?
Will I have to manually adjust it to get it to work with XP as a secondary boot?
Failing that, my other option is to install it on my server. Will VMvare recognize Windows 7 Beta?
If it does, would my best option be to install it fresh to my server via vmware? Would I be facing any problems doing this?0 -
if you're that concerned the boot-loader of the beta may bork your current setup, don't bother with it...it's a beta and things can, and probably will, go wrong.
If you really do want to go ahead, realising that installation may completely stuff up your current install, then I believe installing the beta via another OS is the way to go (I installed via vista and have dual boot) the boot loader is the same...it works..what's the problem? It also, reputedly, runs well in vmware, though I'm struggling to get vmware to run in it
upgrade to vista - not sure.....it's a beta...so you could try, then leave feedback if it all goes wrong.

It's nice to see Apple finally catching up to some of the features Windows has had for some time with the point release of OS X. The jury will be out on whether Snow Leopard is evolutionary or revolutionary, either way, you're still going to be out of pocket..
"Fixed version of Vista" Always puzzles me how Windows Server 2008 good, Vista bad when they are essentially the same. Guess it's just a case of getting on the 'lol hate Micro$oft Fista' Slashdot/Register bandwagon of no knowledge or real world hands on experience of it.
Anyway, back to the point in hand..
1) You can install Windows 7 as an upgrade, although it's always recommended to do a clean install, especially with beta software.
2) If you're wanting to make changes to the Bootloader then use EasyBCD. Simple, easy and effective. Although if you are concerned about running beta software then it might be best to run it through a VM, such as Virtual Box or Virtual PC 2007, both of which are free to use.0 -

Hey, stuff costs money. I've come to live with it.0 -
It will be interesting to see how Windows 7 pans out in comparison with XP. I had the misfortune to use Vista on a Dual-Core Laptop the other night and it was worse than a Pentium 1 for speed! I would have happily thrown the lappy out the window if it had been mine!!!!!!
Well no, I would have just installed XP instead!!!0 -
just a simple question to anyone who might know...as yet another thread has been derailed
does OS X mean...er...Operating System 10 (Roman numeral X=10) judging by 10.0 cheetah, 10.1 puma etc...it looks that way to me. Could it be argued, going by the numbering (10.0, 10.1 etc..) that each release since 2001 is a point release (or a big service pack), charged for by Apple (though losing support of older hardware along the way, and adding new functionality such as the iwork suite integration (hard to believe microsoft were fined for including a browser in an OS))?
If this is the case, what is the issue with Win7 being a chargeable product?
Any chance of everybody accepting that windows isn't right for everyone, nor is OS-X, or Linux, or DOS.
