folding is a distributed computing project which will hopefully contribute towards a cure for some cancers...

Sounds like a worthwhile cause. I think I might have had a client installed that did something like that at one time or another.
as to running windows on a mac...erm...not sure how much I'd have to spend on a mac to have the same performance as my windows machine...I imagine lots more than my PC (quad cpu @ 3.2Ghz, gpu at 9800gt gpu @ 800mhz) :)

Well, you can get a Mac Pro with two 3.2 GHz quad cores and an NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5 GB graphics card for only £4,500.

You'll need to buy a monitor though. And a keyboard. And a mouse. :o

As to buying a mouse...can't I just pull most of the buttons off the one I have?

    lol....how many has it got?

    Apple's mouse has four.

Moneysaving tip: If you feel like maxing out your Mac Pro with 32 GB of RAM, you can save £4,000 buying it from Crucial instead of Apple.

After getting snowed out of work I decided to go get a Mac so I could mark student work from home. I am only a lecturer and do not have much money so went on the Hot UK Deals website and found an ASDA deal for a 150 quid notebook and updated the ram to 1.5gb. Stuck a version of OSx (hackintosh) on it via a usb memory stick updated the wireless driver and installed Logic Pro. It is running 32 tracks of audio with effects on each no problem at all.

Having a Mac has changed my life, I am now cooler, one of those people who speak up at the end of their sentences like it was a question, I dress in laid-back contemporary casual fashion wear, I am also significantly more creative. I am also a smug, preening !!!!!! whose more deftly constructed and wittily argued defence of my Mac, shows the more terrified and wounded I secretly am.

I love my new Mac and life and want to buy some snake oil, magic beans and some of the emperors new clothes.

BTW I have actually made this hackintosh for marking but it will go back to XP when I am done with it. It's a shame Apple could not run their business properly when they had the total monopoly of the home computer market in the 80's or they could have now had more money to make a better OS.
When the bloody hell is nelly coming back?

We had to replace the majority (about 200) of the apple mice at work with cheap microsoft optical mice at less than 1/10th of the price. The mac mice that came with the systems started breaking weeks after we bought them. The microsoft ones however are still going 3 or 4 years after.

My mouse at home has 7 buttons plus scroll wheel, resolution, onboard memory, side wheel buttons, but I suppose my mouse is designed for games and you don't get them on a Mac.

Moneysaving tip: Don't buy a Mac, but if you really want one buy a PC and install OSX on it and cover your case in tin foil.

You not seen the 'I'm a mac' Mac advert with David Mitchell and Robert Webb?

Where did you find optical Microsoft mice for less than £3?

Why wouldn't you return them instead of spending money buying "cheaper" mice? Seems like a waste of money to me.

For what it's worth, I have Apple mice that are almost 10 years old, and they still work fine. They have one moving part (the new ones have three), so they're not exactly susceptible to breaking easily.

    (a) You can get games for Macs, and with the rise of the iPhone platform, there will be even more in future; (b) is there any reason why your mouse won't work on a Mac? and (c) I have an XBox 360 for playing games. It's more fun on a 50 inch 1080p HDTV.

I bet I've spent less on computers in the past 10 years than you have.

Have any 9 year old computers running Vista?

    No, I thought not.

    Yes, of course I have.

You do realise they're actors though, don't you?

cost us £5each. Where did you find the apple mouse for £3?

Cost more to return them than buy microsoft ones - we held an apple conference here a few years ago and even they said that the mice were not built to last.

It's the wire that breaks at the usb end and the mouse end

My £250 quad core is hooked up to my 42 inch 1080p TV through my HDMI output on the ATI card and games run much better and look much better than a PS3 or XBOX 360.

I bet I've spent less on computers in the past 10 years than you have.

I don't really class the Mac as a true computer when they look like this MouseComputerD.jpg

Have any 9 year old computers running Vista?

    No, I thought not.

But I use my computer for high end stuff so why would I want that anyway? The fact that the Mac has only just got up to mid level PC speeds (by using intel chips) gives you the reason why old slow Macs would run OSX - PC hardware changes very quickly and now Mac have seen the light they will also.

    Yes, of course I have.

    Really?!
