Nice to see Microsoft are continually producing better quality and state of the art software, I will wait for Windows 7 to fall below £150 before I will purchase it, next year maybe.
I have not yet download the beta version yet although I will be trialling it for the company I work for - this could be our successor to good old Windows XP Professional.
From comments and views on various fora around the internet, comments do seem pretty positive, screen shots do seem very attractive and sleek - almost reminds me of when XP was first born, oh what a wonderful sight to see such an advanced O/S, at last I could leave Windows 2000 in the draw next to Windows 98.

Another good show from Microsoft.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
  • It is better than Vista. It can run on less of a machine than Vista, and appears to be more stable. The usual security holes that you come to expect from any M$ product are there.

It is not a new product really, just a rejigging and improvement on the dog's dinner that is vista

The 7 starter will only be available on the mini notebooks. Enterprise will be extortionate, as it will be a multi seat license and ultimate will be a limited edition only, so the average user will be using either the Home and Professional versions, just as it has with XP

Networking on it is nowhere near as intuitive as it is on XP, in fact I can see the biggest issues for new users will be trying to understand what happened to workgroups and why & the Home group has problems finding workgroups

Yeah, when it comes out, it might be just as advanced as Mac OS X 10.5 is now. Vista SP3, sorry, I mean Windows 7, includes a whole host of new features that Mac OS X has had for years. Microsoft has been playing catchup in the "state of the art software" department for quite some time now. Though, it'll be interesting to see how quickly they're taken to court over their latest offering.

Unfortunately, by the time Windows 7 hits the stores, Mac OS X 10.6 will be out, which will contain few new end-user features; it will just be blazingly fast thanks to new technologies such as its OpenCL framework.

Still in a few years, maybe Windows users can get as much out of their computers as Mac users get now, so well done Microsoft.

If the mac OS were better for the majority would we not all have it like windows? I am a windows user most of the time and I use it for my entertainment 1080p24hz movies and games and for my video editing and music production work. I wish my mac could do that stuff as good as my cheap 250 quid quad core. It does run microsoft office well though. I work on about 250 new G5 power macs with OS X 10.5 and teach software on them I just wish they would not crash to the blue screen of death, I mean spinning wheel of death. I hate the successful just like any other man and can't wait to see the mac get better and take over the world with its fun and child like easy to use interface.

Still in a few years, maybe Mac users can get as much out of their computers as Microsoft users get now, so well done Apple. (i doubt it)
When the bloody hell is nelly coming back?

With that logic, McDonalds is the best restaurant in the world.

If you want to know how Microsoft managed to monopolise the PC market, I suggest you pick up a book on the subject.

Riiiiiight, the Mac can't do video editing or music production. I don't think I've ever been in a professional recording studio that didn't use Macs. And as for video editing, even the company that made the latest Microsoft commercials used Macs to do it. They've been using Macs in film production since they made Star Wars. And do you know who founded Pixar and now sits on the board of directors for Disney? Sure, no Macs there then.

Better than Windows does some might say.

They haven't made G5 PowerMacs in two and a half years, so I don't know how you use "new" ones. And if all of the 250 Macs you look after keep crashing, I can't but wonder what the link between them is (hint: he's sitting in your chair).

Sure, it's all jealousy. Because Apple are so poor.

I have no interest in Apple taking over the world, and neither do they. They just want to make money. Which is handy, as they're very good at doing so.

I see what you did there. Very clever!

thanks guys & gals some interesting comments there, I beta tested vista on an old machine, but haven't really got an old machine to run Win 7 on so what you have said has made me want to buy it when it comes out, although I think I might wait until the price comes down abit.

That will be microsofts big problem pricing . How low would it have to be in this day and age to tempt you to upgrade from xp / vista

sorry I should have said, I first bought windows vista premium for £60, then got vista ultimate with a 20.5" laptop, paid £600 for that, then I recently bought vista ultimate for £139.99 with a free 1T HDD for the 2nd desktop, so I would have to say no more than £140, really.

Windows 7 is based on the Vista kernal, so really it is the fixed version of Vista.

The beta does not seem to have a lot of the drivers, so you can get into a catch22 situation whereby you need drivers for your network card, but of course unless you have them on cd, you have to get from windows update, which of course you cannot as you are not able to connect to the net unless you have a second computer with access.
