Does Hx do that? ....................................... I know A&L note IP addresses before asking further security questions, but HX have never advertised that fact.

Yes they do ........ and I seem to remember them running a telephone number collection campaign via Statement / Email etc when they first introduced it?
It's their alternative to Card Readers. If they identify someone logging online from a PC different to the norm ... they assume fraud. Put up a screen suggesting 'unusual activity' ...... and request you select one of the telephone numbers you have pre-registered, for a call. Which is automated ... and requires you input part of your security code. Fuller detail here :

    Nope. Same pc.

...... strange then, as it fits fairly precisely with the detail in the link above. And that's initiated when they identify (some earlier threads on this) you're logging in (as fraudsters would) from a different IP

Don't remember seeing that, but as I said, it's actually flawed in that untrusted PCs may become trusted by Halifax, because IP addresses are not unique to one PC and (in theory at any rate) could represent over 65000 PCs. Saying that, I do approve in principle.
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...

I wonder if logging into two different online accounts to make transfers in quick succession might factor into this?

On the subject of Halifax trying to track 'trusted' PCs by logging IP addresses, that does seem a strange way to go about it, especially when much more reliable results could be obtained using cookies.

I cant quite remember now whether OH's account was logged into before mine or not (I got the warning screen first)...but his account was definitely logged into, very soon after mine so that may well be a factor.

i use egg money manager and both mine and my wife's accounts are listed on them so both get logged on at the same time...

i also have done the transfers in short successions from mine to her account...so far not had any warnings (fingers crossed).

i am using the account to make debit card payments though...so anything which needs paying (and where I can't use my credit card without having to pay a charge) I am paying out of halifax to give it a "used account" look

Shouldn't make any difference. My OH has a sole Reward account where she abuses the housekeeping funds! And I often have both our Portfolios open in different Windows at the same time.... as it's more sensible moving funds around in hers as her sole accounts are Gross.

Final offer :p. Have you moved internet provider recently .... or done anything else that could have affected the PC address? As Halifax appear to think you have!

I log onto my halifax account from different pcs at various different locations and different broadband providers (e.g family, sometimes at work etc)

I've never had any kind of security message

    Nope. :D

We really are boringly staid. No changes at all. We also only ever have OH's wage and usual CB & Tax Credits etc going into our account so it's not like all of a sudden there was a rise in money coming in or going out.

I was tempted to phone them to ask why but I doubt they'd tell me and I dont want them to see the Reward accounts too closely as they'll know fine I'm just moving money about to get the £30.

Oh well, maybe they've got me under watch or something now. Most excitement I've had in my middle aged life in ages. :rotfl:

    Me too.

I'm hoping if I cycle £1K through the accounts prior to 6/5, then they'll pay out the fivers in June as well. Got to be worth a try!

Nice thought - but difficult to imagine they'd credit a fiver on 1st June to an account that was closed on 6th May! Even if they did, it presumably wouldn't be accessible online.

But as you say, nothing to be lost.

Ok, you've got me perplexed then.

They don't suspect you of laundering (the money ..... not the underwear kind) otherwise they wouldn't tip you off. So if you're not logging on from an alien PC .... they must have been short of something to do, and you were on the 'pester' list! ;)
