Daily OS thread - Saturday 7th February

Options
Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Saturday 7th Feb. This is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread that we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we have achieved already. Everyone is welcome so please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well”, type start does just as well.

Morning lovely OS friends!:D

I have been up since 0300. Tristan is home from the hospital and logged on this afternoon so we kept each other company for a few hours and then he went for a late afternoon nap and I went to bed too and got back up at 0300 to chat to him some more!

It is so wonderful to have him back. One day at a time of course, but right now he feels great he says. The Drs still want to operate to put in a tube to drain infection from his body but he is being stubborn and saying he has faith it will go on its own. Yes, I know, it isn't likely, but it wasn't likely that he would ever wake up again and he did, so maybe being a stubborn cowboy is working for him! I wish he would have the op, but he says if he has one they will try and persuade him to have others and he doesn't want to be in hospital.
Anyway, we have had a lovely time together today. thanx.gifall so much for all the continued support and good wishes.
hbsong.gifJackieO, I hope you have a great day!
Hester - well done on the 7 jars of marmalade, I can't make anything that involves standing for ages but I can still bake with some help so it's not all bad news...
mudgekin - *hugs* for you honey
r.mac - any signs yet??
Sybil honey - I hope you will forgive the presumption but I went to look for the posts on the house thread to see what had been said about your OH and while I understand why you are upset, the person who suggested your OH wasn't caring enough doesn't know you and hasn't heard all your lovely stories about you and your family. For you to leave the Daily Thread when we all care about you feels like you are 'punishing' the wrong people here! We would all miss you terribly - we all DID miss you when you disappeared at the start of the week. Please reconsider?
Tru - great news about the mortgage! I unfortunately signed over to a 3 yr fixed rate at 6.2 about a year ago now so am trapped! Can't remortgage as I only have 7 yrs to go.
SunnyGirl - good luck with the benefits. I am so happy he is settling down - sometimes all they need is some positive attention and love to help them make changes..
Maya - you seem a forthright person and in that spirit, you will usually get forthright responses! Thank you for the apology for misquoting me and I hope you will still consider posting on here, as Sybil said, you are welcome.

I did all my baking - ginger and raison hobnobs, cornflake cookies, rock buns, cheese straws and cheese and chilli cracker/biscuit things. All the Locknlocks are jammed full!

Today when my OH finally gets home from Taunton (the roads were really icy so he stayed up there another night in the end), we will have sausage stew from the freezer that we made the other night.

Need to do a couple of loads of washing too - have fallen behind.

Am chatting to Tristan as I post here - he says to say thank you so very much on behalf of him and his family to everyone who has been thinking of him and lighting candles.

I hope you all have a great Saturday

warm gentle hugs to those who need them..

Diva. xx

  • Morning Guys!

I have had a terrible night and my nurse isnt here till 8am. I came downstairs at 3.45am and put my heat pad on the sofa and have the quilt over me, have taken pain killers...so at least I'm warm. I hate nights like this! OH made me a cuppa and I started crying as I was really quiet (well thought I was) as I didnt want to wake him. We have realy get to get our toilet plumbed in upstairs as our own loo is downstairs. STOP complaining PP....I know theres worse problems out there...sorry.

MSD-Glad to hear about Tristan. Its amazing how far he has come in such a short time and he is now home...thats brill.

Jackie0-You are one strong lady and I admire you. Enjoy your birthday with your wonderful family.

I wasnt able to visit my family friend who is ill because of the weather and lost the £18. I sent a card yesterday as she was having a pick line put in her arm Thursday for the next round of Chemo which is a stronger one that she has been on for the past year.

WM & DW need to go on. House pretty tidy.

OH went to Bluewater yesterday as we have a wedding next weekend and his suit needed adjusting on the leg...it looks great now. He got them [STRIKE]reduced [/STRIKE] shortened and they did a FREE reajust (sp)

We have a friend coming in to do some building work on Monday upstairs. He is hanging 3 doors, coving and putting all new architrave (sp) and skirting up. Think it will take more like 1.5days and as he has no work we have negotiated a good deal and OH will be teaching him some IT stuff and be helping him, so the price was excellent. He has 3 kids and this time 6 months ago was charging a minimum of £150 a day labour, but with the current recession, he is barely getting a few days a week. Will ask him about the toilet actually.

Forgot to say. OH has his signing exam this week so please wish him luck.

    I am rambling now..sorry.

I missed CHurchmouse's birthday....sorry hun. Hope you had a nice day.

    Hugs to all.

    PP

I've been up since 3.30am, I couldn't breath while lying down and I can't stop sneezing. I've had breakfast, lunch will be at about 10.30am, I think :D

Not sure I want to walk to the Co-op today, the path looks like sheet ice  It'll be good for the legs, right? All that balancing? OK then, I'll give it a go :D

I have a ton of washing to do - thanks for that, master tru

I've finally got some money for more printer ink so I've ordered it. I can get on with my gift bags now :T

I'm itching to get going in the garden but the snow is still there.

    Morning folks.

Cold here with a brisk wind, so making it feel like -6. No snow for down here, we have had our rare dose of that so we shan't see any more for a while.
But the smow in Devon meant that most of the food supplies did not get through. We went to Tesco last night and found most of the shelves empty. No milk, bread, meat, diary, frozen etc. Just goes to show how vulnerable we are. With the lost of local bakeries and milk supplies etc we could run out in 48 hrs.
Still got a few car problems, need to get a new ignition barrel for the missus car and my alternator had not arrived, due to snow and no deliveries getting through. great.

Off to Penzance today for a day out and spend my birthday money on fishing tackle. Looking forward to buying somthing that is not food, fuel or repairs.

    Cheers folks

Hi all. No snow here, although they threatened us with it. It's been cold, windy and sleety, but we've been so lucky not to have any disruption. I hope those who have, are coping well and keeping warm and safe, especially with the worries about the low levels of salt and grit.

MSD - I am so pleased that Tristan is home and you are back in touch properly. (((Hugs)) to him, you and his family.

PenPin - lots of (((hugs))) to you. Please don't think you're complaining, either. You are just explaining what is going on and we all like to know how you are. I hope you get the loo sorted out. I hope your friend manages to find some more work - it's a worrying time.

My DH is having to earn less for a day's work, too, but the bills don't go down to compensate, do they? He even turned down a job yesterday, for a contract company he does a lot of work for. They have lowered the rates they pay, by £100 for the same type of work he was doing for them last year, but added more work, plus they have decided to charge sub-contractors a 2.5% levy if he still wants to continue being paid two-weekly instead of monthly! With the worries about businesses going to the wall and leaving people unpaid, the last thing he wants to do is wait a month for his money! He went to look at the job - an hour and a half away by car, so £20+ in diesel a day, and, when he came back and we did our calculations, we just knew it just wouldn't be worth it. He'd rather take his chances and look for more work locally, but it's becoming a real worry now. Oh, well, thousands more in the same boat. It's looking really grim out there these days.

Tru - do you HAVE to go out? You're not feeling well and it sounds like the weather has been atrocious where you are. If you do, take care, get some Lemsip or whatever you like, and get back home in the warm! That's an order!

Well, as I say, no weather problems here but it's still cold. They have promised a good day today which is just as well because DH has to work; he's replacing someone's conservatory windows and doors, so they could do with it being dry and not windy!

Dinner tonight will be beef stew and dumplings - enough for us and the freezer. Pudding will more than likely be bananas and icecream.

I have some paperwork to do once DH has gone to work, then the prepping for the stew and then I hope to take some time off for a snooze. I've been so tired lately and waking up far too early, even for me!

Hope you all have a good day. Take it easy in the snow.

    Good Morning Chums,
and thanks for the birthday greetings.I am sorry you had a bad night PP, I though I would have an early one (10.30.p.m.,early for me ) as my sis-in-law from Faversham is coming this morning for the week-end and woke up wide awake at 2.15.a.m. From then on I just dozed .Got fed up in the end and got up about an hour ago. I think I'm better off going to bed around 1.p.m. as I seem to sleep more soundly then. But as one gets older(another year gone )you don't seem to need so much sleep. I was just thinking as I made some tea just now ,this time last year I had a groshon line attached to my chest, and was going through chemo, no hair ,and feeling pretty grim. This year, no line ,my hair has returned -albeit rather two toned dark and white as opposed to fair and light -but none the less its back, and very curly. A hard way to get curly hair, but I must admit its not bad at all.
No line stuck to me and although I get a bit tired, and my disco dancing days may be gone I feel quite cheery. :j I keep thinking onwards and upwards and everyday is a bonus.
I am back at college and only have one more essay to get done this term, whereas last year, I wasn't sure if I'd ever get to go back.So life sometimes does improve ,although at the time it seems that nothing is going right.
I have my two lovely girls coming to see me this morning and also my tribe of grandchildren.I spoke to my youngest DGS last night who is four and a half and a real little charmer.
me: Hello Mikey how are you ?
Mikey: (amidst giggles) I'm fine (more giggles ) we've got a present for you
Me: Oh that's nice will you bring it tomorrow
Mikey: O.K. but will you buy me some tubby custard(what he calls tinned custard for some reason) and stay to dinner
Me :Yes o.k will I get a present then?
Mikey Oh yes, we wouldn't give it to anyone else on the way to your house 'cos its got your name on it.:rotfl:
he's a very literal little boy at times, and I adore him,as I do all of my tribe.
I am so lucky to have my family close by me, and I probably talk too much about them, but they're noisy, loud, make lots of mess at times and are a bit exhausting ,but I wouldn't swap them for all the tea in China. They are the main reason that I would not give up after I lost my late husband, and I thought if I can get through that then cancer is nothing to get too steamed up about.
They have been brilliant, and Nanny without any hair was hardly noticed. The younger boys used to sit on my lap and rub loads of cream into my head and at one time we were all in fits of laughter as I looked like an iced bun as they got a bit too enthusiastic doing it with the cream.:rotfl:
But we all got through, and laughter helps when your feeling a bit ropey.
So to anyone who is frightened of the diagnosis, then I always say don't think of the worst, try to think of a year down the line and what you can get out of every day.
I count my blessing all the time as some of the terrific folk I met whilst having my treatment sadly wern't as lucky as I was ,but there is a great comraderie in hospital and everyone was so great .I had my chemo at Maidstone Hospital at the time when it was having a very bad press, but I can only say that the staff were terrific to everyone there and I won't hear a word agaist the place.
My local hospital (Medway Maritime) is in the middle of building a chemo unit at the moment for patients in the area, and a lot of the cash has been raised by local folk.It will help thousands of folk in the years to come .My craft class helped the McMillan fund a couple of weeks ago by making over 130 cards for them to sell to help boost the funds a bit. I received a lovely letter from them last week thanking us all and will take it in with me next Tuesday when I go. My next venture hopefully will be to ,not run ,but a fairly good hobble in the Race for Life in June. I just want to put a little back that might help someone else who, like me 18 months ago was scared silly at the prospect of what was to come . I am still in touch with lots of folk I met whilst I had treatment and we all say 'this time next year' ala~Del Boy.
Well today is 'this time next year' and I'm now thinking again 'this time next year' and what I will have hopefully achieved.
I would like to say thank you to all the great people who supported me on this site You all know who you are and if I could I would love to take you all out for a glass of something, but as I can't then tonight when I am out to dinner I will raise a glass to all the people who have helped me get to 'this time next year:beer: and I look forward to being here next year and doing the same again, thank you all:A :A
Now having as Mioliere would say 'moilered on ' I shall go and make some more tea and open my cards .
I hope everyone has a good day and <<hugs >> to those who are feeling a bit down and blue ,it will pass, as everything does and the sun will come out again.
    God Bless you all

    Morning All

 Many Happy Returns Jackieo:beer: , I am glad you have your family near you I think its a true reflection on your mothering that you are so close. (Did that make sense - I know what I mean anyway)

((((Hugs))) to anyone who needs one, Sybil dont know what has happened but dont go.

Woke up expecting everything to be white but it isnt :j . Have loaded the wm and unloaded the dw. Just enjoying another cup of tea then will go and get dressed. This mornings plans - make Lasagne for tonight, got to the Library and walk the dogs. Off to town for lunch then chill or ironing this afternoon. Also need to do my online shop.

Feeling quite energetic & motivated today, think it is because I only allowed myself a small lie in - half an hour - any longer and I get up feeling groggy.

    Have a great Saturday.

Morning all! It's nice being able to post here earlier on weekends! :D

I think I missed Churchmouse's birthday earlier in the week to, and happy birthday too Jackie O for today. what a lovely post too - your family sound brilliant!

MSD - so nice to hear that Tristan is home.

Pen-pin - if that's the worse you do so far as complaining is concerned you keep it up - as someone else said we like to know how you're getting along and you need somewhere to talk about it if you want to keep the brave face on for your family. xx

Halight enjoy the farmers market - I love ours but it's not until next week. We get all our meat from farmers markets these days - never buy meat from the supermarket any more.

EssexGirl - not sure whereabouts you are but we still have a fair bit of snow lying and the back lane behind the flats is still lethal with ice - I watched one of our neighbours fighting to get the car out just now.

It's bright here but very cold - I stuck my head out the dor when her ladyship demanded to be let out this morning - she's now scratching and miaowing to come back in so I guess she thinks it's cold too! Plans for today are to head over to the market in a while - I want to get a couple of 1lb loaf tins and Mum tells me that the stall that sells the cooking equipment also has the paper liners for the tins at a bit of a saving on Lakeland's price so I shall get a pack of those and share them with her I think. I want to do some cooking and then this afternoon we'll head down to the rugby club to watch the match. Probably pizza for tea, not sure what yet for lunch, toast & Marmalade for breakfast.

    Have a good day everyone!
