Fab blanket Beccatje!
It took me 3 years to crochet a "Giant Granny Square" blanket with odds and sods of yarn gathered from all over the place, begged, scrounged, freecycle-donated etc...
I gave it to my DD for Christmas last year, she was delighted and it was a great surprise for her as she had been asking for it during my work on it and I always said "no way, with all the work I put in it I wouldn't give it for the world!"... HEHEHE little did she know!
I find crochet really relaxing don't you?

Same here lilac_lady,I can cope quite happily as I've had to do in the past. Also we don't have the outgoings we had when our girls were growing up so it's easier for us anyway but it realy upsets me to see our girls having to struggle with families and all that it entails.I've been getting quite depressed with it all recently.I also feel a bit guilty since I'm beginning to feel I have'nt prepared them for having to struggle financially since when they were in their teens they always had plenty and can't remember when they were small and we were realy hard up so they're just not used to it.I think I've cushioned them just a bit too much, but that's what mother's do don't they. You can't win realy, can you?.0 -
Interesting article Kitty, thank you. Makes you think about things even more, I think that a recession will be a huge shock for so many people, even those of us who are trying to be prepared will probably be shocked by some of the consequences.GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000

I know this may seem a bit odd, but I am actually looking forward to a more basic lifestyle. I know things will be harder and we will have less money etc but I think we (certainly my generation or younger) could all do with a wake up call. I am seeing it as a challenge and I know with the help of everyone on this thread I will get through it and hopefully be a better person for it.:)Do more of what makes you happy:)0

I hear you sammyjig, I retired in July last year and boy was that a wake-up call! Most people I know on basic pension are worried about the coming months but I'm luckier than most, I still have my mum/best friend (in her late 80's) who gives me some pretty good tips about making ends meet. She lived through WW11 with a family of 3 children which taught her to be frugal. She's carried the lesson most of her life although she had a career which gave her a reasonable income, as she loves her dancing holidays (still has 2 a year:dance: ) and to spend money on her family :A.
The moral is - if you want to keep food in your belly and a roof over your head just ask a pensioner how it's done :rolleyes:0 -
I was forced by circumstances into a much simpler life 3 years ago and I can honestly say I've never been happier. I don't have any debt (don't have any savings either though!) and have dropped out of the consumer must-have society. Life is good!
But I really feel for people who are being badly affected by circumstances at the moment, particularly for small businesses. Lets send some positive vibes out there!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

it's my youngest son I fear for. He is a self employed joiner , new baby, new house, new van, and had to rent out his old house when the sale fell through. I think he's walking a cliff edge.0

it is affecting me emotionally too lilac lady. I was fine for 2 1/2 years since I started the thread but events are just so fast now and it is like we are on a runaway train. I don`t want to listen to the news but I am addicted now
I am a really cheerful person but sometimes I feel tearful at what is happening as I don`t see us getting out of the mess like in the 30s 70s and 80s. I can`t help worrying for my children who are all young adults with mortgages. Then I see ordinary people on tv, like a mum with 2 children who is getting her house repossessed through no fault of her own. I believe this situation is now past being a wake up call and is very very frightening
I have to say that I hope karma gets to the greedy greedy people who have caused this to happen0 -
Mardatha, I really hope that your son will be okay.
Mine has a mortgage and 2 young daughters and although he has a very good job, you never know who will be next to go.

Hugs to you.Felines are my favourite
